Popped-off buttons...

I kept popping-off the button on my favorite pair of khakis (too much pie, I reckon). I'd sew it back on with my WWII vintage pocket sewing kit and it'd hold for awhile... then "POP!", off it comes again...

Then I read about using dental floss. As thin as thread but many times stronger.

Now the button stays put and I can have all the pastries I can stand!

You can also use the dental floss to fly a kite high enough that binoc's will be needed to see it!
This is because string is about four times heavier than the floss.
Just don't ask me to come over to wind in all that floss

Tandy leather has metal rivet type jean buttons that are rather cheap. About 5 bucks for a small package of about 10.  (I think)  On all my pants and shorts that have the sewn on button I have replaced them with the rivet type button.  They go on easy, just push the back with the nail type point through where the button used to be and hammer the button portion down over the shaft.  They don't break, they don't come apart and you can eat all the pie you like.
