.223 G2 23" Bull Barrel--what bullet weight?
« on: October 02, 2007, 11:11:34 AM »

Just got my .223 barrel scoped.  I read that the factory barrels have a 1:12" twist.  Those of you with a contender or G2 carbine, which bullet weight does yours prefer?  This will be used mainly as a trainer for my kids, and range fun.

Regards,

Mike

Mike, In factory amo mine shoots the winchester white box loads the best. They load a 45gr bullet. For reloads the sierra 52 gr match bullet is a good shooter. With that twist I would just stay 55gr or less. Regards, Byron

Grumulkin, In a 1/12" twist. I've never been able to stabilize that heavy a bullet in a barrel with that twist. If it works for you thats great. Byron

I've had no stabilization problems with Speer 70 gr. Semi-Spitzers in 1:12 twist barrels from the T/C line.  I use them with great accuracy in a 222, 223 & a 22-250.

Stabilization is more related to the length of the bullet than the weight but of course, the heavier a bullet, the longer it will be.

Honestly you will never know for sure if you don't try them.  I have 1 in 8 twists that shoot 40 gr bullets and 1 in 12 that shoot 60 gr. bullets. The fun is the trigger time finding them loads. ;D
