The 45-70 on a Survivor stock is going to hurt with most hunting loads..Same for the 12ga. loads...You can have any of the shotgun barrels except the 10ga. ones fitted for it..Quick has those camo synthetics o  one of his rifles...and would work rather well IMHO...more so than the Survivor stock set.

i think it is a tinkering thought one of those what ifs or playing around thoughts like would it work and how would it feel but you are right probably be pretty hard kicking on the recoil well i will just keep thinking. thanks Terry

You could always add a large Limbsaver slip-on recoil pad to the Survivor stock if it wasn't too long for ya. If that doesn't work, swap it out for a different stock as Mac suggested, all stocks will fit all frames except some forends are different. ;)

thank you that would be an idea the recoil pad i was just thinking would be cool for a shorty type rifle might have to consider itand would definitely get the recoil pad to try.

IMHO the Survivor stock is the most versatile stock available for a Handi.

The thing I like about the Survivor is that you can easily add or remove weight.  When bench shooting my 30-06 or 270, I add about 6 pounds of BBs to the butt stock.  I imagine a 12 pound 45-70 would feel pretty nice compared to a 7 pound one.  When hunting, I remove the weight and then have a nice light carry gun.   I never feel the recoil when shooting at game anyway.

I also agree with quick about the Limbsaver.  I use one and love it. 8)

I just recently made a BB bag out of old denim.  The bag weighs 4.5 lbs and slides in to the storage area easily.  This makes adding and removing the weight super simple and fast.   ;D

As for the recoil comparison, here is what I found at chuckhawks.com

Cartridge (Wb@MV)           Rifle Weight   Recoil energy    Recoil velocity
.30-30 Win. (150 at 2400)          7.5             10.6               9.5
.45-70 (300 at 1800)                   7              23.9               14.8

As you would imagine, it looks like the 45-70 kicks more than twice as hard as the 30-30.  Not only 2x harder, but also with a 50% more snap. :o

Hope this helps,
RW

I think the 45-70 would be a fun round and i like the idea of the weight in the stock with a good recoil pad should'nt be a problem butwould be better if i reloaded due to price this is all helping very much makes me want one more i will ask though how is the 308 for accuracyi have heard the 45-70 is one of the best handi's for accuracy so how about the 308 i would use this gun for deer and maybe a coyote but want a few more barrels for this frame that would be better for my other hunting.

I have a Survivor in 308 and it is pretty accurate...at least it is to me.  I consistently shoot 1 to 1.5 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards with Winchester 150gr sp. factory rounds.  The bull barrel is nice because it adds more weight up front.  With the Limbsaver on it I don't bother to add weight unless I am going to be putting a bunch of rounds down range.

I have not done anything to help accuracy.  No trigger job, no O-ring, no floating of the barrel.  The 308 is used only for whitetail and shots are never more than 150 yards, so 1.5 MOA is planty good.

My 270 Survivor has a standard Handi forearm (painted black) and shooting factory Federal 130 gr. I get 1 inch groups, but that's after using all the accurizing tricks with the exception of hand loading.

1" to1.5" at 100 yds works for me but it wouldn't for others i have read alot of good things about the 45-70 for accuracy and if i could get those results from the 45-70 at 1"-2" at 100 yds. thanks for the help.
