? on Ruger #1 Price
« on: September 24, 2007, 05:01:56 PM »
Hello, I have been craving a #1 for some time now, and an acquantance has one for sale, for $800.   It is a .270, made in late '60's.  Has very nice wood on it.
Haven't been able to find anything comparable on any of the internet auction sites, so was wondering what you all thought of that price.

New here, so forgive me if pricing questions are frowned on.

Thanks for any help,

Mike

IN my opinion that is a bit high; but for the good wood of the past and the better triggers that were on them and some say the better barrels as well you may be told that is just fine.. depends. I would think that you can find one for 650; 600; 700. You could also post your price question on rugerforum dot com.
I have heard that the older ones had the above mentioned advantages and that the color of the recoil pad is different from the more modern ones indicating it is one of the good, old ones.
I paid 800 for an anniversary model with great wood, and gold filled engraving on the metal and signature of Willim b. Ruger on it...to get the gun and the wood.  It was without a box so judged as a shooter in new condition. That said then : if you want it get it, I loved mine in the sporter configuration in 270, it was the most confortable and light and just the best go to gun I ever owned... kept the others all in the closet cause I always grabbed it for everything.
I will pay that much for one, but I think the general consensus is that for a ruger one the price is high... factor in the fact that some say it is a shilen barrel and truly adjustable trigger and take into consideration the wonderful wood, and it gets more reasonable by the second.
I sold mine cheaper than that to a good friend with and option to buy it back anytime for the same money. base price was 650. so go figure.
hope that helps.

Late 1960's?
If it has a low S/N that would be cheep.
There is a Yahoo group for Ruger No.1's.  There are hard core collectors there that can ask you the correct questions and give you good information.
If you want a No.1, want to hunt with it, don't care who owned it before you or could care less about your uncle's rifle, you can find new No.1's between $700-800

welcome to the forum.
Pricing questions are perfectly acceptable.  Selling guns or looking to buy guns in this forum is not acceptable.

If you are looking at a No. 1 this article might be interesting http://www.galleryofguns.com/shootingTimes/Articles/DisplayArticles.asp?ID=34.

Also, I have seen new 1A in .270 for sale for $833.

I stand corrected Htrigger is most correct, I do believe on the value of the early ones. later ones are cheaper.
I think you will love any No. 1

Thanks for the replies.  I'll see if I can find out a bit more about it.  I haven't seen the gun for a while, but IIRC it has a red recoil pad, not sure if it's factory or not.  It does wear a pretty nice piece of walnut, all tiger-striped.

If you shop around there's no doubt you could do better than that  unless you're attracted to that one.

A lot of the ss/lam ones are being sold at low prices since they were discontinued by Ruger and basically clearenced out to the distributors.  They inturn clearanced them out to the dealers.
The old one could be a good deal depending on condition.  However, if you want one simply as a shooter and rifle to be used, a more recnet, les sought ofter one would be a more economic chocie.  You should be able to find a decent used blued/walnut one for $700 or less.
