Range Results
« on: October 07, 2007, 08:36:52 AM »
I just finished at the range with the 45LC 250gr Gold Dot HP's.
2 inches at 30 yards, I'm very happy with these as far as accuracy, I had 5" at 50 yards, not bad seeming as I've only fired about 250 rounds out of this Ruger 5.5" BH since I bought it new. I will be doing alot more practicing with it, and see if I can get to 5" and under at 75 yards. I wont need to shoot further than that with a handgun, if I do I'll use a rifle.

I hope the piggies and deer find them deadly.

I think I will start reloading soon, I have a friend who will help me set it up and get started, I'm sure I will have a lot of questions though, I hope every one will have patience and help me.

I like what I'm reading on here about the cast bullets, and how they penetrate. I will be looking for a cast bullet 250-260gr at about 1050-1100fps, gotta watch that recoil.

Gene, you should be getting better groups.  I shoot Hornaday 300 gr XTP/Mag bullets.  I can get 1.5" groups at 50 yds with my Ruger BH Hunter (7 1/2" barrel).  I have a 2x Burris handgun scope on the RBH Hunter.  I have also shot 2" groups with my Bisley BH (5 1/2" barrel) at the same distance.  I have open, hard sights on the Bisley.

What powder are you using?  I am currently using a suplus powder (WC820).  It is aquivilant to AA9 powder.  I tried to post a photo of my test targets, but am at my other computer and can't.  Do you do your own loads?  If so, can you run your own tests of different bullets and powder?  This how I came up with my ultimate loads for each of my hunting handguns.  I also do the same for my rifles.
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

Larry, Gene is using factory loaded stuff now but plans to start handloading in the near future.  Maybe he can shrink his groups with some special made mojo do-it-yourself loads!  A lot of shooting tight groups with a handgun off a bench is technique, but that usually doesn't do much for handgun hunting when there isn't a bench to rest on.   My RBH 6.5" will shoot shots touching at 30yds but sometimes I can't seem to get the pistola to cooperate and the accuracy Gene is getting now is acceptable hunting accuracy for hogs and deer.

I'm happy with that, the group is tightening up somewhat but I am also using iron sights, no scope. It gets a little better every shooting session, all I am looking for with iron sights is under 5" at 75 yards, I change my expectations every time I see the group tighten up a little.........I do not plan on scoping this handgun, but when I get a little more experience with it, I would like a SBH 44mag scoped. I'll be there soon enough...............
