Sabot Question

Hello All

I have a T/C Pro Hunter and to start out I shoot 110 gr of T7 and T/C 250gr Shock Wave w/Super Glide sabot.

At 100 yards I can take the center out of my target on the first shot. I clean with #13 between shots then #2 & #3 are 3" to 4" off. I will try other powder and loads later.

My question , I recovered some sabots that were fired and one had no ears and two others had one ear still on the sabot base. How should a sabot  look after being shot?

i tried 777 in my Encore with 100 grains of  granular 777.   The first shot from a clean barrel is exactly on.  The second shot from a dirty barrel is always at least 6 inches off somewhere on the target.  If i clean the bore well with Windex with vinegar between shots it will make very small groups, usually about one inch.  With 90-110 grains of Jim Shockeys  Gold that gun shoots the first shot from a clean barrel and subsequent shots from a dirty barrel to the same point of air-exactly on target.  The bullets that i have used are the 240 grain XTP with short black sabot and the 250 grain SST in a red sabot.  My Encore shoots both to the same point of aim.

I've switched to JSG powder, and find that the first 2 - 3 shots will hit close to the same point of impact, after that I can get a flyer 3" - 4" out of the group. I clean after every third round. As long as your bullets are being stabilized, I don't know how much I would worry about what your sabots look like.

Shooting Triple 7 in my Omega with a variety of bullet/sabot combo's, I find I get a consisitent point of impact if I clean between shots with a patch damp with windshield washer fluid.Used T/C #13 and rounds went all over. Swabbing is really an important key in getting the rounds to group together.I have no problems in winter as the alcohol in the fluid keeps it from freezing yet allows it to evaporate out of the bore quickly when dry patching prior to reloading.Straight rubbing alcohol did't give very good results either.Some brands have additives which might leave residues or effect the sabots. Water works fine as well but  freezes and doesnt evap as quickly as the w.w. fluid.Plus if you forget it home you can get some at any gas station or drain alittle out of your car. Good luck.

In my honest opinion, I think it is in the super glide sabot's. I have been shooting 120 gr. of loose triple7 and the bonded 250 gr. shock wave bullets with the black sabot. My accuracy shot after shot is outstanding.  Just for the fun of it, I tried the T/C 250gr Shock Wave w/Super Glide sabot on Monday. My results were disappointing. I could not get a decent group. My groups were 3 and 4 inches. I did not make any adjustments to the gun, but I did go back to the 250 gr. shock wave with the black sabot's and my groups came back to 1 to 1/2 inches at 100 yards.
My conclusion is, my gun does not like the T/C 250gr Shock Wave w/Super Glide sabot.

Windshield washer? Is this summer or winter w/antifreeze?

Regular rotgut $.99/gal. I'd say summer, definately not antifreeze type. Residue in the bore is a no-no.You want as close to clean an oil/solvent free bore as you can get.

I simply spit on a patch, run the wet side down, then the dryer side.  Inch groups are the norm for me doing this, and I don't have to carry fluid with me...can do the same out hunting.  No residue either.

My gun is pretty consistent whether on a clean bore or swabbed bore, although the difference becomes noticeable at 200 yds.  Since it takes multiple shots to sight in the gun I find it easier to hunt on a once-fired bore than a newly cleaned one.  It is not unusual for me to take more than one deer in the same hunt, so it's impossible for me to always hunt on a pristine bore.

Which way dose the 2nd & 3rd shot move from the point of impact of the 1st shot?

I can put the first shot dead nutz at 100 yards. Number two could be 3" to the right and 2" low. Number three, 2" high and 3" left.

I don't think my barrel is too hot. I use T/C #13 between shots.

Try shooting without cleaning between shots, that is what I do. And if you feel the need to clean between shots, just use a spit patch.

Mine acts somewhat like yours. On the clean bore i was always lower and to the left of the point of impact of the fowled barrel . My Encore climbs to the right on a fowled barrel. It stops moving on and after the 3rd shot but I found I will need to swab after 5 or 6 in order to re- load with out breaking the rod.

Through trial and error I have found if I fire just a primer through the "clean" bore then load I can remove some of this. I am not sure if the primer fowls the bore a bit or what but it helps my POI. After I fire the 1st round I then swab between shots with a DAMP spit patch. I only lick the patch. I try to do this as 1 stroke down and back up. Use caution if you feel a crud ring. You may need to bounce up and down near the bottom a bit to bust the ring lose. I then turn the patch around and always go 1 stroke down and back. I then take a clean dry patch and repeat the 1 stroke down and back. With out shooting the primer alone I reload and fire. I repeat this exact procedure between every shot.   


Favorite load is 112gr T7 fffg, 7 primers & 250 shockwave bonded with the superglide.

I've found that I can fire three shots before I need to run a damp patch down the barrel of my Encore. I am using sabot's, .44 240 grain, and Pyrodex RS.
