2007 KY Handgun Elk
« on: October 13, 2007, 01:30:13 AM »
This is a pic of my 2007 KY Bull Elk. Gun: Ruger Super Redhawk with action job, barrel recrown & forcing cone by Pinnacle Performance. Scope: Bushnell Trophy 2-6X. Caliber: 44 mag. Load: Garret 330 gr. hardcast @ 1400 fps. (guaranteed & proven to shoot broadside through an elk's shoulders). Hunted this bull 2 days before getting into handgun range and ended up being a 7 yd. shot. I truly thought he would hear my heart pounding.

tonyinky - way to go.  Beautiful Elk you have there.  Not too many people know that Elk have been re-introduced to Kentucky.  I have a disc that my father-in-law sent on just that topic and it is very interesting.

Congradulations on a very successful hunt.  Mikey.

Great elk!  I'm in indiana and I know of the secret herd of about 5,000 free elk wondering around kentucky.  I put in for the lottery but being a nonresident, my chances are slim to none.

teddy12b,
I was hunting alone. The temps were in the 90's. My plan was to kill an elk where I could load the field dressed animal immediately onto my 4wheeler trailer and get to the slaughter house ASAP. This elk was coming to a water hole in a small basin. After the first shot the elk jumped a ditch and stopped at 20 yds. He was hurt and not going anywhere and was in a perfect spot to load him. I stood up and shot offhand to finish him off. I went & got the truck, snapped the pictures, field dressed the elk and winched him onto the trailer and off I went. I love it when a plan comes together.

Sounds like it was a pretty good plan.  I especially like the winch part since you were by yourself.  Great hunting story.

tonyinky, was that a tagged Elk? I see the tag in its ear, i figured it was either a tagger Elk or just your field tag. My taxidermist would yell at me if I stuck the tag thought the ear if I was intending on getting it mounted. I take it you are going to mount that Elk?  I know I would... Again congrats on that Elk.   ;D

Tonyinky
Does this make you the first one in Ky to get an elk with a handgun? WAY TO GO!!!! I am so glad KY let us use a handgun now to hunt elk. I will keep putting in for a draw and hope I am one of the lucky ones. I will use a 30 herrett if I do get drawn.  This is what I will be using to deer hunt with this year.

I assume the tag was put on by the KY Dept. Fish and Wildlife. There was also a small metal tag in the other ear. Since elk are a restoration animal in KY some are tagged upon release and some KY born elk are field tagged later to help track info. I haven't heard of any other elk being taken by handgun in KY.
