Ruger vaquero old model price check questions/opinions
« on: September 15, 2007, 03:44:07 AM »
Howdy all!  I've come across an old model vaquero - 5.5 in. blued/case colored finish, cal. .45 long colt that a local dealer took on trade.  He is asking $399.  It's in good shape and could be unfired.  He says it's 10 years old but unfired.  I've dealt with him before and feel confident to do business with him again.  Does that price seem a little high for a "new/old" vaquero?  Seems a little steep to me.  Thanks very much for your opinions and replies.

all depends on how you look at it , a  New model Vaquero will cost more and be less of a gun , the Vaquero you are looking at will  handle  any 45 load even the hot ones  or you can down load it to cowboy loads ,

either way its a fine gun ,, myself i am always looking for a deal so i would try to talk him down a little , some where in that $375 range , but if you can't , its still would be an ok price ,

remember they are not making them any more so they are getting a little harder to find ,  so 399 not bad  but it sure would not hurt to try and get it down

Hawk and Superdown, thank you for your input. I didn't feel $399 was TOO bad - as you say, " they ain't makin' them any more" and the old model just fits my bigger hand better. I had one of the "new models" in my hand and wasn't too impressed.  I was also thinking of offering $350 to start and would be tickled to get it for $375. I'll let y'all know how it all comes out.  Buckshot Bill

I thinks it's a fair price , they are getting harder to find , i just picked up an orginal vaquero in stainless 5.5 for $525.00 , i did pay the price , depends on how bad you wan't it. i also have a new vaquero. i'd take the original over the new any time.

As far as price, you won't get hurt. I prefer the older Vaquero, since it can handle heavier loads all day long. I can load down for plinkng, CAS, etc, or up to handle bear-sized game. If you are a Cowboy Action Shooter, many prefer the slimmer grips and lines of the newer ones, adn I think that even the new ones will give several lifetimes of service.

Update. Well, I finally got serious about getting a deal done on an old model Vaquero.  Found another one at a different local dealer-.45 long Colt  4 5/8" blued CC--[well, what Ruger calls color case hardened anyway.  ::)] It seems to be in really good shape. Looks like it's been fired very little. I'll find out soon, and the best part-- I brought it home for $350 OTD!  Some lighter springs and a pair of slightly thinner "gunfighter" style grips, and I'll be just tickled pink!!
