« on: October 16, 2007, 08:52:39 AM »
I am looking for a source to obtain in bulk the 240 grn lead HP bullet that TC uses in their Cheap Shot sabot rounds. Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Not sure who makes that bullet for T/C.  i ordered 500, 240 grain semi-wad-cutters and they shoot good from my guns in the short green sabots.  i use them for hunting squirrels and rabbits with  60 grains of Pyrodex.

Been looking for them myself for years . Unfortunately they're not available :(.I'm considering having a mold made,HOWEVER, pure lead does funny things in  a sabot. They grow fins into the space between the petals.Shot some 200 gr. .430's which grew 4 fins that measured .478 across! Looked like straight rifling.Accuracy stinks.Cast bullets apparently need to be alloyed to work.BTW, despite advertisements ,the Cheap Shot is NOT a 44 cal.Every one I've miked measured .452, hence the black sabot.I tried some .430 Hornady XTPHP 240 gr  in green Harvester sabots driven by 70gr of 3f Triple 7 ( 1650fps) and got MOA accuracy from my Omega Z5. Blew the crap out of 2 does already ;D!They are death rays :o! If jacketed bullets are legal in your area give them a try.I'm finding that .44 cals are much more accurate and consistent in my .50 than the oft recommended .45.BTW the Cheap Shots are claimed to give XTP performance at cheaper prices.

I am an avid fan of the cheap shots and they are all I use for deer hunting and are very accurate. The original cheap shots were in deed 44 caliber and I have about 3 boxes left however TC changed the cheap shots to a 45 caliber bullet same weight. TC did not change the part number but did remove 44 caliber from the package outside and did not indicate the caliber of the new ones. Any way I am looking for a good 44 caliber bullet because you can not get the cheap shots with 44 caliber bullets any more and ones with the 45 caliber bullets are getting hard to find.

Double30- My hunting buddy used the XTPHP 240 grn bullets last year on 3 deer and did not get decent penetration and no pass thrus; in fact they just went to pieces right after entry so he went back to the cheap shots. I do not know why but results were unsat with the XTPHP bullets. He was shooting 100 grn of granulated triple 7 and the shots were all around 40 yards so may be the velocity was too high for that bullet at close range.

It was too high.  Have used .44 caliber XTP bullets since 2000.  Have killed a lot of deer and dozens of hogs with them.   At first i used 130-150 grains pf Pyrodex:  Then found that these heavy loads are not necessary.   Now i use 80-100 grains of Pyrodex RS.  Love those .44 caliber  XTP bullets and have never lost a hog or deer that was shot with them.

Not sure if you will find the exact bullet in bulk, but I'm sure you could find something very close.

Last fall I bought 10 packs of 20 count Cheap Shots w/sabots for $1.88 a pack at Bass Pro. Not sure if they are running the same deal again this year or not. 200 bullets w/sabots for $20 including tax is hard to beat. On the way home I got to thinking, I couldn't even buy the sabots for that, wish I would have bought a case of them now.

Best price I could find on the 20 packs is at Midsouth, $4.53 each. The bulk packs used to be available but I can't find em any more. :-\

I use 240 grain .44 hollow points (Berry Bullets) in sabot and 120 grains Pyrodex RS in my Encore. Haven't tried it out on deer yet but it will hold 1-1/2" 3 shot group at 150 yards, off of sandbags. Gun will shoot a lot better than I ever can. These bullets are about $21 for 200 from Cabelas and look pretty good.

My gun shot the old cheap shots well, but it wouldn't shoot the new 45 cal ones very well. They were OK, but not quite as good as the old ones. So, I bought some knight 260grain .452" lead sabots. They shoot about as well as the old cheap shots did from my wolverine. They were 8.99 for 20, so they are not as cheap as the cheap shots, but if your gun tends to shoot heavier bullets better they are worth a try. Plus they hold their energy better than the new 45 Cheap Shots. I am planning to hunt deer with them this winter. I expect similar penetration and expansion results as with the old (44 cal ) cheap shots because the sectional density is roughly the same and the lead seems to be about the same hardness (determined by highly scientific method of scratching a bullet with my fingernail   :D ) If I shoot a deer with them I will be sure to give a report.

I think that it is made by Raineer bullet co but when i CALLED THEM they gave me the price of them and when I called them back to order them they then said that they could not sell them to me because T/C owns then...What a bummer.
