308 Component Suggestions
« on: October 18, 2007, 11:30:16 PM »
Hi All,

I will be reloading some 308 for a friend who has a Rem 700.  he is looking for some close to factory loads for deer hunting.  I have plenty of loading books, but I was wondering what has shot the best from others Rem 700 in 308.  What grain bullet, and powder in grains, ect.

Since I don't have the rifle, it will be difficult for me to play around like I normally would to develop a load for it, so Im looking for a base line to start with.

Thanks for your help,

Like you I don't have a Rem 700 either. I searched the internet for loads for my Tikka 308. A standard load for th 308 seems to be 44gr Varget, 165 gr Sierra Game king. I used Winchester LR primers. I used a Stoney point gauge to determine OAL. I shot my first group and got .75", shot another and the results were identical. I find this more than acceptable for a 300 yard deer rifle and I loaded up 50 rounds before a 4 week work project in China. I know that when I get back, just before gun season in TN, the rifle will shoot. I am sure that a little adjustment in powder could acheive even better results but didn't have the time to try before I left. Try 6mmbr.com for more info.

I'm using Speer's data for the 150 grain softpoint using Varget powder. Seems to be a very good load.

I am a big fan of the 308 & have 3. My favorite loads for deer hunting include 165grn bullets, usually Sierra or Hornady. If I was to load some now I would look to Varget,H4895, or RL-15, that is what I have on hand that I know would work. If you don't have the rifle I would do some cross referencing of manuals & stay conservative on the powder charges.   One thing to think about is OAL of the loaded cartridge. Somtimes the listed OAL in the manual is to long for a specific chamber. I reloaded for a friend's 30-06 once & that is excactly what happened. The listed oal was to long for his chamber. I later measured it & shortened the rounds & all was fine.
