Shortened 308 range report.
« on: October 19, 2007, 03:39:02 AM »
I took this rifle and a chronograph to the range the other day. Three hand loaded ammunition samples were tested for speed and accuracy. All ammo samples were charged with 43 grains of RL-15. This is near a mid range load according to all manuals I have referenced for 150 grain bullets.

The best accuracy was obtained with the 150 grain Corelokt bullets grouping 3 shots @ 100 yards @ 1.3 inches with a three shot velocity average of 2424 fps.

The next was a moly coated 150 grain Partition. The 3 shot group was near 3" @ 100 yards and the 3 shot average velocity was 2456 fps.

Next was a 150 grain Bronze point. The 3 shot group @ 100 yards was 3+ inches and a 3 shot average velocity of 2483 fps.

This rifle seem to be very particular about bullet selection. Maybe tweaking the powder weight and brand and OAL will make the difference, or just stay with the Corelokt.

This is the rifle barrel I had shortened to 20" by a very qualified local gunsmith.

Try a few variances with seating depth, powder and powder charges. You'll soon find the sweet spot and can then fine tune the best candidates.

You might throw in a couple factory loads as well.  Mine chrono'd at 2640fps with the Federal Power Shok 150gr, and shot a sub-1" group at 100 yds.
