.308 vs 7.62 x 54R for plinking
« on: October 01, 2007, 04:42:25 AM »
Hey all

Been thinking about buying a russian Mosin Nagant 7.62 x 54R for plinking. Would like opinions about this round vs. a .308. I know military surplus rounds for the Mosin Nagant are relatively cheap, and .308 are also available. But which would be better for burning a couple hundred rounds a weekend?

The mosin is  lot of fun and the price is definitely right. There isn't a whole lot of performance difference. The longer barreled ones don't have the muzzle blast of the m 44's but I enjoy my short barreled unit and it is surprisingly accurate.

For plinking, if you don't reload, you can get the 7.62 rounds for cheaper than .308 rounds.  I've seen the 7.62x54R rounds for about ten cents a piece.  (Look through southern ohio gun, they usually have good deals)

If you do choose to reload, and want to think about hunting with the gun, then the .308 is the way to go.  There is more ammo availability for the .308 factory, and also cheaper brass available for reloading.  Brass for the 7.62 is expensive.

So if you are planning on buying surplus ammo and plinking cheap - the 7.62, and if you are planning on hunting with it, and possibly reloading - the .308.

Hi,

There is an additional benefit for the 7.62 Russian.  For those of us who cast their own bullets,  The neck of the 7.62 Russian is longer and helps keep more of the lube under the brass.

Creekbear - you really can't go wrong with the 7.62x54.  Surplus ammo is readliy available and at the right price for lots of plinking fun.  In addition, the 7.62 x 54 is at least the ballistic equal to the 308, if not better.  Much of the sporting ammo for the 7.62 x54 is topped with either 180 or 200 gn slugs, which lends to the performance of the cartridge.  If I was going to purchase another 30 caliber rifle it would most likely be one of the mil-surps in 7.62x54 rather than a 308.  The 7.62 is probably closer to the 06 in performance than the 308.  JMTCW.  Mikey.

I'd have to say go for the 54R also.  i bought a 440 round can of albanian surplus for $35, and it's decent ammo for what it is.
as far as the rifles go, they are funny looking, kinda clunky to operate but it's like shooting a Ruger Blackhawk- you won't break it.
brass is a little expensive compared to .308, it runs about $30 for a hundred  but handloading for this rifle will really bring out it's potential.  just slug your bore first
besides, nothing barks quite like a mosin  ;D
