Need .357 HP bullet mold.
« on: October 16, 2007, 10:05:20 AM »
I've all but decided that my life will not be worth living anymore unless I can find a .357/8 four cavity HP bullet mold.  I don't know why it always seems to come down to something like this but that's just the way I am!!  If anybody know where such a critter can be had please let me know, thanx.

I don't recall ever seeing a multi-cavity HP bullet mold.  The pin that creates the hollow point is usually separate from the mold handle/body.  I'm interested to see what others come up with.

I hate to see your life end but there is no such thing and no one will or can make it. HP moulds are all single cavity and always will be. So learn to live without it.

Check out the cast bullet board.  Buckshot over there has modified multi-cavity moulds into HP's, if I remeber correctly.  I've seen a couple Modern bond 2 cavity HP's also - but they are as scarce as hen's teeth.  Or get yourself a normal four cavity mould and do some talking to a good machinest.  It's possible, just expensive.

Dusty

Just try to find a Lyman 358156 HP (it's also a GC design) and you will live long and prosper. With that bullet you can cast them of a softer malleable alloy (1-16 tin - lead works well) and push them to 1400-1500 fps out of 6 - 8 3/8" barreled revolvers. Out of 10" Contenders 1600+ is quite nice. Expansion is nice with that alloy. An alternative is to get that bullet in 2 or 4 mould and use a Forster hollow pointer (1/8th drill) made for their case trimmer.  Since the HP bullets are for top end loads I don't shoot that many of them and use a double cavity 358156 to cast the bullets and then HP them as needed.  Lymans 358477 (plain base 150 gr SWC Lyman mould) works well for my mid range loads and Lee's TL358-158-SWC out of a 6 cavity mould works great for .38 Special level loads. The 358156 HP (HP depth 2/3 way into nose) cast of 1 - 16 tin lead alloy at 1400 fps out of my Ruger 6" barreled Security Six is death on deer, coyote's and jack rabbits.

However, if your life will end without a 4 cavity HP mould please will you shootin' irons and reloading gear to me.

I have a double cavity 358 mould of Carl Cramer's HP design (Marked Cramer No.26 onthe sprue plate) 158 gr nominal.. the difficulties associated with getting two good bullets per cast are more than enough fun for me,and indicative of why his design didn't sweep the world of casting by storm. I leave the use of anything with more cavities to someone with MUCH MORE dexterity than I've got.. 8) eggsucker

Dusty: Forester make a little hollow point gadget to drill hollow points in standard flat point bullets.  Might look at that.  I know that the hollow point moulds that I have seen on e-bay are really pricey!  I don't know if you've ever messed with hollow point moulds but they can be a pain.  I have the following HP moulds: Lee 357-158gr hp;  Lyman 44-280gr (devastator); lyman 45-70 - 330gr gould; and a Lee 45-70 405gr.  I normally scrap at least 1/3 of the 357 bullets that I cast (or course they get recycled) due to noses not being filled out or some other defect.  I use ww with 1-2% tin added to get the moulds to fill out properly.  Still tough to get the scrap rate down.  Just my $0.02 worth.
