Recently I had a problem with my Garmin 76CX shutting down on its own. This happen with both Alkaline, and rechargeable batteries. I would re-start the unit and it would function fine for a few hours. This gets to be problem because while hiking or hunting a keep the unit in the track mode. I also want to be able to review the unit if I encounter game and have to track it.
I thought is could be a software problem, loose battery connection, a faulty Micro SD card, or worse case a problem the circuit board. I was tempted to go to the Garmin update page and re-download the latest update. But I changed my mind because I want to create a track record with Garmin with my unit in case there was a warranty problem. I went to the support page and filled out the request for support form and submitted it. Within 48 hours I received the following reply.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International,
Does there appear to be any corrosion on the battery terminals? Also,
do the batteries fit tightly into the battery compartment? If not, you
may need to insert a small piece of foam into the batter compartment to
ensure a tight fit.
You may also need to reload the software to the unit. Here are the
instructions:
1. Click on the link below and click "Download". Choose to save the
file
to your computer.

to a location such as the "My Documents" or Desktop.
3. Once the download is complete, locate the file and double-click on
it. This will launch the Win-Zip Self Extractor.
4. Click on the button labeled "Un-zip".
5. Once the un-zip process is complete, click on the "Close" button to
exit the Win-Zip Self Extractor.
6. Open the C:\Garmin folder locate the file named 'Updater' and double
click on it.
7. You should see the name of your GPS device next to the 'USB Device'
option on the Updater program window. Select the 'USB Device' option,
then click on 'OK' on the Updater program window to start the data
transfer.
8. Once this is complete the unit's operating system will be update to
the current version.
If the problem continues, you may need to reset the unit. Be advised,
this may erase all of your user data. To do so, with the unit powered
off, press and hold QUIT + MENU + ZOOM OUT + POWER for 10 seconds.
Then
power the unit on.

I did not re-set my unit but I did go back and update the unit software. Basically the Updater removed the current software version from my unit and reloaded it. I am on high-speed cable Internet and the time frame was very short.
After the process was complete I checked the unit and found that the waypoints, tracks, and routes had been erased. I had saved these items to file on my computer in early September. I re-loaded those to the unit.
I had not updated the file since the start I started Grouse and Quail hunting the second week of September. I lost a number of tracks I created bird and deer hunting this year. Before I did the update I thought about doing another save but I did not. It would have taken a couple of minutes with the cord hooked up to the computer.
Reloading the software resolved the unit shut down problem. I thought I would share this with you. I am more then satisfied with Garmin Support.
