Shredder Ammunition
« on: October 21, 2007, 10:36:55 PM »
When I was younger I remember some type of ammunition that I believe was called a “Shredder round”.  Don’t know why all of a sudden I remembered/thought about this, possibly because I never researched this back in the day and am curious about it.  I remember that this type of bullet was outlawed or taxed so insanely high no one would buy it. They did this because of the what the bullet did which was when it entered your body it flattened out in a certain way that it wouldn’t shoot straight thru you but “bounce” around inside of you “shredding “ your guts  so much it basically liquefied you and when the doctors opened you up there was no chance they could ever save you because of the beyond excessive damage too you so they were outlawed or taxed, I can’t remember which I heard or it might have been they were trying to get it outlawed/taxed at the time and that is what I heard about it. Anyway if anyone knows about it, are they called “shredder rounds”? How do they work? How is it designed so it does this and not just flatten out and go right thru?  Or did this round even exist, I mean kind of like the myth about Kevlar tipped bullets “slip” right thru any body armor.  Is the “shredder round” a myth like that?

The only time I ever heard the term shredder was in the Bruce Willis movie "The last Boyscout". It was supposedly a shotgun round, that killed all the bad guys in an office when Damion Wayons threw it in the fire place. It's fiction.

On the other hand Teflon (not kevlar) tipped handgun rounds were outlawed as the original "Cop Killer Bullets". These were KTW ammo invented by three cops from Columbus Ohio for police use only. The fact that this ammo was intended only for law enforcement was ignored by the liberal gun banners of the day, and it was subsequently banned for anyone. It was the first example of the chicken little mentality which was also used to ban Black Talon ammo.

I think I also remember the shredder.  I could be wrong, but, I remember it as a hollow point with saw teeth on the rim used in bowling pin matches because they would grip the pin better.  There was a company the used to produce all kinds of weird ammo like that.  Don't recall the name of the company.  Reminds me, I still have quite a few boxes of Bingham exploders...folly of my youth.

It was rumored that Winchester "Black Talons" later renamed the SXT had the effects that you describe as the shredder...I assume this is actually what you are speaking of.  Winchester pulled the Black Talon's off the market even after doing research to show that it was no more deadly than any other hollow point ammunition, because of the anti-gun folks screaming about the lethality of the round.  At some point after the Black Talon was released and before it was pulled Democratic Senator Moynihan (NY) supposedly stated that the Black Talon was "designed to rip your guts out...."  Thus I believe starting the outcry against the "shredder" ammo, and leading to Winchester recalling the Black Talon.  I haven't poked around for it lately but I don't think the SXT is even available anymore.  I may be mistaken but I believe the rifle version of the ammo is the Winchester Fail Safe round....Like I said though I may be wrong.

Sounds like they pulled it from the market due to false advertising. Just about everything you describe is physically impossible except for the punitive taxation -- that's very commonplace.
