How did you guys do on opening weekend?
« on: November 19, 2007, 06:43:21 AM »
We didn't get anything on Saturday.  There are six of us in our camp.  Four of the guys saw a bunch of doe's and some smaller bucks.  Myself and one other guy didn't see anything on Saturday.  The guy that didn't see anything on Saturday with me, shot a big bodied 6 point on Sunday.  It was his first buck!!!  He shot it around 6:45 am at about 50 yards using a Mossberg 500 12 ga. with Winchester Partition Golds.  The deer ran 40 yards or so after the hit.  He was the only one to get a deer this past weekend.  I'm the only one that didn't see anything.    ::)

While Saturday was a pleasant day to be out in the woods, it wasn't productive.  That's OK with me since I get to spend more time in the woods.  Heard some shots on the other side of the river.  My son-in law's group got 3 over the weekend around Richfield Springs.  Next weekend I plan on hunting with friends in Madison County.

Got an 8 pointer about 8:30 AM Sunday. First one I've shot with my 20 ga. Encore slug gun. Hit him quartering away at about 70 yds. right behind the last rib. He went 20 ft. and piled up. That Lightfield really hit him hard.

Saturday turned out to be a good day for me,At 11am I shot a large bodied buck that was with a doe.The buck was missing all of his rack on one side and about 1/3 of the other side, but still had 4 points.I also got the doe that he was with so my deer season was short.
That dog will hunt

Took a six point on Sunday afternoon.  Hunting my friends property.  30/06 180  Remington factory RN loads, about 110 yds, bang flop.
Fellow I was hunting with took a 7 point, just five minutes before mine, from the same field, deer dropped within 20 yds of each other.

Still have a bear in the area.  I'll be looking for him next.

Qtip, it's nice to hear your 20 ga. worked so well.  This season I'm using my fathers 11-87 20 ga. and shooting Lightfield slugs.    ;)

Saturday was great for me.  Around 9:30 I got a shot at a big bodied buck.  After seeing the first round hit, the deer ran back into a very wet swamp.  Turned out that he was a 3 1/2 year old eight pointer with lots of mass and an 18" inside spread.  Without a doubt, my best ever.  Had to go into about 2 1/2 feet of water to retrieve the buck, hardly noticed how really cold that water was.  Oh yeah, the weapon, a TC Encore pistol in 7.62x39 using 125 grain Corbon ballistic tip ammo, range 80 yards.  Best of luck to all of you who haven't connected yet.

Usually first day has a lot of shooting going on in the vicinity(Tyner)  but this year it was the quietest day I ever witnessed
in 38 years of 1st day deer hunting. I had one doe come up from behind me and get spooked because the wind was
blowing directly to it and meanwhile my brother didn't see a tail.  A friend and his buddies shot 3 nice doe nearby.
Saturday I had same problem with 4 doe coming from behind and not getting a shot. My weapon of choice is S&W 629 Classic
with Tasco reddot sight and handloaded 44 mag with 240 xtp on top of 22.5 grains of H110.
Well I have a few more days to hunt and maybe will be able to fill my two doe permits at least. Best of luck to you all for the rest
of the season!

Lousy ,
deer hunting here around Kingston has been lousy.I saw one doe on opener and missed a 3 pointer with my revolver at 45 yrds a few days later.Thats it ! People i work with have been saying the same things- few deer sightings. This is the 3rd season for DEC's antler restriction in area 3C and you'ld think there would be more sightings and of larger racked deer...not so.I knew it was going to be bad because of very limited pictures i've taken with my cams this summer/fall.I am beginning to think my area has a poaching problem. We also lost atleast 3 deer out front of the property on Rt.28 due to cars.On the other had upstate around Fort Ann my friends shot 6 deer between the 4 of them in the 1st 4 days of southern zone. Not sure whats going on.

We ended up taking a 6 point, a 7 point and two doe at our camp.  There are 6 of use in the camp and one guy shot the 7 point and the two doe.  This was my first year down there (probably going to be my last too).  They said this was a down year for deer in our area.  The people that live down there and others with hunting camps didn't have any better luck then us.  :'(

My uncle and I shot two 8 point bucks and a doe on opening morning in Delaware county around Hobart.  Much better luck than we expected.  My friend gave me his landowners doe tag this past weekend and I was able to get another doe.  Quite a few decent bucks were shot in the area from what I heard.  There are no antler restrictions here either, but we had no doe permits the two years prior to this one and only a limited amount were given out this year.  Just goes to show that antler restrictions are not necessary to produce larger bucks as long as the doe permits aren't given out as freely.

I work with a guy who lives and hunts off of 28A in W. Hurley.  He took a nice 8 point during archery season and his son shot a very wide 9 point during gun season.   They haven't seen too many does however.
I've seen very few does on my friends property in 3J and we've opted not to fill our doe tags, hoping for more deer next year.  Between the neighbors 90 acres and my friends 30, there have been three bucks taken (a 7 and 2 6's), two does, and one bear.  Seven hunters.

Gregory ,
ya ,your buddy hunts close to where i do.Not only didnt i get a deer but i had my brand new homebrew (homemade ) deer camera stolen ! Damn thieves .I'm hunting on 150 acres that only i have permission to be on.The camera was fastened to a big pine tree with a 5/16" x 6' Master Lock Python cable lock ,rubber coated stranded steel wire.Looks like they used a Hatchet to hack it off the tree.My theory is they were in they're stealing car parts and my flash went off and caught them.I set that out in the woods on a Sat and by the following fri it was gone.Wait till i catch these ( 2 people ,left tracks) jerks.
