Ruger 77 tang saftey problem
« on: October 28, 2007, 06:09:42 AM »
A buddy of mine borrowed my 77 in 234 and just returned it to me with the bolt locked open. He is not sure what he did but the back end of the bolt is twisted and the bolt stop is hitting the safety.  Does anyone anyone know how to solve this problem? I am sure that it is simple but I just cant seem to figure out how to turn it back. I also can not remove the Bolt either.
Thanks,
Tuna

The bolt stop is on the left side of the rear receiver ring and would not hit the safety. I'm guessing you mean the cocking piece is hitting the safety button. The rifle has been de-cocked with the bolt open. Rotating the bolt head at the rear will be possible if the cocking piece is withdrawn a bit. Hooking it with a piece of aluminum should give the purchase needed the compress the striker spring. The bolt head can then rotate to allow the cocking piece to set on the notch at the top of the cocking cam at the rear of the bolt body.. I've included a link to a diagram below. Note the bolt release is D53..

Not to put too fine a point on it...I was taught NEVER to lend your wife, gun or truck...to ANYONE, ESPECIALLY KINFOLKS.  Not doing so has cost me a few "friends" I probably didn't need anyway.  Not sure if it worked completely...wife run me off, but I don't have any broken shooters or wrecked trucks(including ATV's, M/C's and lawn mowers).  ??? :-\

Glad you got your Ruger fixed.

I loaned my wifes sisters husband a pre 64 94 in 32 Win. special abt 35 years ago and the last time I say it he had drilled the stock and put on a cheap tacky looking sling on it, BTW most of you call that person a BROTHER IN LAW, I could never bring myself to refere to him with the word brother in any content.   JIM

I've learned to also include power tools.  :(

What the heck was I thinking. I have had that gun forever and never done anything to it. I should have lent him a beater but I can assure you that that was the last time that I lend a gun out. Oh yea, I don't have have any beaters.
