.416 Taylor

I've read somewhere that a .416 Taylor cartridge can be made out of a Mauser 98 action.  If this is possible, does the bolt and extractor have to be reworked?  If only a barrel, this may not be too expensive a project.  And are the ballistics good enough for DG in Africa?

It is a capable DG cartridge according to many - I have no personal knowledge of this cartridge.  You might want to check out the .416 Taylor website:

It will require opening of the bolt face, and modification of the extractor and feeding ramps – all of which is easily performed by a competent gunsmith.

This cartridge will work fine in a "standard" length Mauser M98 action but will be to long for the intermediate action.  Here’s a link to some description/explanation of the various Mauser actions:

It is based on the .338 Win. mag. case, so it fits in a standard action length, with the magnum head size.  The bolt face, and extractor will need to be opened up on an action set up for standard cartridges, i.e, 30-06, etc., and the action rails may need to opened a bit to allow proper feeding of the fatter cartridge, but most experienced smiths have no problem with this.

The round will basically duplicate the performance of the other .416 rounds out there by pushing a 400 gr. bullet at, or near 2400 fps., although because of it's smaller case capacity, it does it at somewhat higher pressure.  It is a thumper, and with proper bullet selection, and placement, I'm certain will be effective on anything that bleeds.
