Loose Hooked Breech Barrel??
« on: October 18, 2007, 09:42:07 AM »
My old TC Renegade is or has what I think is called a hooked breech barrel system.  The barrel has a squared hook of sorts on the back end of it which hooks into a steel receiver piece that is secured in the wooden stock.  Does that sound right so far?   To remove the barrel, I pull the wedge pin, tilt the barrel upward, and lift it out of the stock.

The mating of the barrel and the piece in the stock has become slightly loose over 25+ years of shooting and handling this gun.  It appears to my untrained eye that the hooked breech has worn a bit and now does not hold the barrel firmly and allowing no movement.  When handling the gun, I now notice a slight forward/backward movement of the barrel where the two pieces mate.  Is this movement a fault of a worn hooked breech, badly worn wedge pin, or ???

Can this this corrected?  If so, how?  New barrel?  New wedge pin?  Big hammer?

It doesn't appear to hurt anything other than it disturbs me knowing there is some movement there.  Not sure this would effect accuracy or not but suppose it could.

Any info and feedback is appreciated.

Thanks, Dave

Without seeing your gun in person it is hard to really say, but early TC's were notorius for being loose.  It wasn't so much a problem with the breech as it was with the wedge pin drawing the barrel tight against the forearm.   Wood dries out, wedge pins wear, the alignment of everything can change just enough to allow the barrel to be loose.

Try putting a patch of thin cloth between the barrel and fore stock and then inserting the wedge pin.

my T/C hawkin got kinda loose so i bought a new wedge pin, but just for sake of experiment
i laid the old one down with the tip on an old bolt hit it lightly with a hammer, kinda
half moon shaped now. when i put in the right way now barrel is tight, other way barrel is
a little loose.

I can see where bending the wedge pin would help tighten things up a bit but would that stop or do anything for the forward/backward movement of the barrel assembly when it is all assembled in the stock?  Seems that slightly loose condition and the forward/backward movement would be controlled more so by the hooked breech mating.

when hooked into  the tang the barrel should not move forward or back , it should be tight .
the wedge pin is to hold the barrel down into the stock .
be it a pined barrel or a wedge pin type , the under lug should be  be wider then the pin , thus alowing for exspantion of the barrel and the wood .

your hook should be tight  keeping movement from forward to back . the wedge pine hold that movement up and down .

 you can
1) solder on a shim to tighten it up
2) have the hook built up and then filed to fit correctly
3) send it back to TC and have them fix it

for definition;
The "breech" is the big fat part screwed into the end of barrel that holds the nipple and has a "hook" on the end.( TC used a "hooked snail breech")(nice! very reliable).
The "tang", is the metal part installed in the wood stock that receives the hook part of the breech.

If there is movement between these pieces when the barrel is installed, you'll get one heck of a "kick" when shooting.
Now, too determine if there is wear at the point of tang/ breech,,and not worn or miss-alignment of the tang to stock, simply remove the tang and hand fit it too the breech hook while both parts are out of the stock. You'll then be able to see which part, if either is worn. When the face of the tang is against the breech there should be no movement. It is a T/C so it has a "Lifetime" warranty.
However, sometimes a small shim of some sort under thefront screw of the tang as it's installed in the stock can help bring it back in place just for the season.
P.S. don't strip them wood screws holding the tang in the stock, a little bar soap rubbed on them threads helps

fixing stripped out holes on the wood screws is easy fix. If they are stripped get some wood match sticks. Fill the hole with wood glue and shove the match sticks in and let them dry. Put the screws back in and your done.  Ron

As the others have said, there should be no forward/backward motion in your Renegade.  It seems improbable that it could wear this much in a lifetime...if there is much movement, it was probably like that from the factory.  Send it back to T/C & they will fix it under warranty.
