Hey BlackHorn Shooters!
« on: October 16, 2008, 10:35:17 AM »
I believe the non-corrosive, high velocity, and other virtues of BlackHorn are reason enough for many to use it, but wonder about the accuracy issue.

For your gun in your experience, which of the following is MOST true.

A. - BlackHorn is more accurate in my gun than any other powder I have tried.

B. - Accuracy with BlackHorn is about the same as I can get with at least one other sub.

C. - I can get a little better accuracy with one of the other subs, but BlackHorn is close enough and I would rather use it.

D. - BlackHorn has not been as accurate for me as one of the other subs.

A:  No

B:  Yes, I've gotten good results with pyrodex, both pellets and loose powder.  Blackhorn is far, far cleaner and for me at least, that makes it worthwhile.

C:  N/A

D:  No

In my encore the blackhorn is a little more accurate than T7.
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

Equal or better accuracy. However, I weigh all of my BH209 charges on a scale which I did not do with other powders. I load the small plastic vials that I got on Ebay at home and it sure makes life easier at the range.

Yesterday I shot a 2" 3-shot group @ 200yds with a 250gr ShockWave and a 120gr V charge of BH209. Not too shabby.

One other thing - who says BH209 isn't dirty? I'm amazed at how much black tar like crap I get out of the bore on each return trip from the range. I have been shooting 25-30 rounds without running ANY patches through the bore while at the range.

BH209 has a permanent place on my power shelf, but I can only use it in 2 of my 7 muzzleloaders. It's reserved specifically for Elk hunting due to the high cost and limited application. I use Pyrodex-P for everything else. Both are great powders.

Just tried it today. Started at 25 yds. First shot 6:00 on black. Raised it to top of black with next two. Moved to 100 was a little too high, dead on horizonally.

Droped it to 12:00 black for next three shots in black....1 in.

Did not swab between shots.

120 grs. (measured) under Hornady .44 300gr. XTP/factory green sabot.

Did not have time to shot other combinations, but looks like gun (Encore) will like the powder.

Easiest BP sight-in ever for me.....7 shots and done.

Can't wait to shoot more......will report.

Did a little fine tuning of the ProHunter 209x50 yesterday. I increased the charge of BlackHorn slightly and am currently using 85.0gr weighed under the original 250 Shockwave bullet.

Took 3 shots @ 200 yards using my Nikon Omega scope and the second ring for aiming. Looked back into the spotting scope and found all 3 holes circled around the 1" orange dot. The group measured 1.75" center-to-center. The range officer couldn't believe it. :o

I think I'm ready for my upcoming deer hunt in NC. It will be during the regular rifle season but I'm anxious to use the muzzleloader. I've killed lots of paper targets since I bought this ML but haven't taken it hunting yet.  ;D
