Brother coming on board
« on: June 10, 2003, 03:11:42 PM »
Turns out my brother has been giving serious consideration to joining CAS.  All this without my knowledge.  He has been looking into it and has been visiting the websites of CAS clubs and businesses.
We go out in a couple of weeks to give him his first taste of it.  Other than our wonderful Texas heat and humidity he should have a blast.
Hee Haw, don't get any better than this!

That is great. I envy you. I don't have anyone in my family interested at all. That is why I call you all family. I have to lone wolf it. Some of the things I say and do about CAS causes some raised eyebrows around here and my wife doesn't want to know how Evil Roy did or even who Evil Roy is. Yup, I am green with envy.

Gotta tell ya, it's great to have a family member who enjoys the same activities you do.  I feel very fortunate that my wife, "Texana Trueheart", decided to try CAS shortly after I got involved, and fell in love with it.  Had to build a bigger gun cart and acquire twice as many guns, hats, outfits, etc., and spend twice as much time reloading ammo and cleaning guns, but it has been worth it.  We've had some really great times and met a lot of great people shooting with various clubs here in Texas.  Our next big adventure (once Social Security benefits kick in next year) is to load up lots of ammo, load up the motorhome with all our CAS stuff, and take off across country, with weekend stops scheduled to coincide with club matches along the way.  Always wondered what a New England cowboy looks like.

Come on out to Californy and shoot with me. I am a transplanted New Englander and that way you can shoot with a New Englander in California and save all kinds of gas. :)
Seriously, when you get out to the left coast don't forget all the good shootin' in northern Cal.

Howdy, Howdy

Appreciate the invite.  May take you up on it before long.  We were out there about three years ago and really enjoyed the scenery.

Howdy,
Any problems bringing in CAS guns?  Just curious.

No problems, thanks to sass. They had passed this no more than 10 rounds in a magazine law. SASS went and got the exemption for our cowboy lever guns. You are OK there. The other rule would be to keep your weapons far enough from being instantly obtainable. By that I mean, stow them in the trunk or in a locked case or if a motorhome, keep them under lock and key. It is a good idea to do that with ammo too. There is no real hassles here if you use common sense. I would want my stuff under lock and key and out of site anyway. Open carry is not legal in public areas. In rural areas, I still see gunracks for rifles, but I do not believe it is legal to display like that.
There is shooting every week end in the state. I think there are more clubs here than anywhere else. I occasionally shoot to the south, but I have never been to EOT or anything. I like to spend my bucks at regionals and annuals. I have a lot of fun at them and I see and meet the top shooters in the game at them here on the left coast. My club has a few world champions in it. I have seen fast, but I am not a real competitor myself. I just mess around with BP and shoot for personal bests and the fun of it all.
I am serious, if you are around my way please email me and I would love to fill you in and shoot with you. I am right near gold country, the motherlode, area. There are old west towns still here and plenty to see about the old west right nearby. Ya gotta go south 400 miles from me to see things like Disneyland and all, but this area is more of what California used to be about 150 years ago.
Hope that answered the question. Now, I am getting ready today to head over the Sierras to Fernley Nevada for the Western States Championships.
It will be four days of some great fun, camping and getting together more of our shooting pards. :-)

My brother and I are going out tomorrow and shoot my CAS guns.  He is a good hunter but I want to be sure he understands all the CAS rules and doesn't have to learn in front of our posse next week-end.
He still sounds very excited about CAS and I'm hoping he will like it as much as I do.
Just gotta remember this isn't exactly a poor man's sport.

Well, we went a-shooting and he is a better shot than me!  He really liked shooting the RV's.  Fine job with the rifles, too.  Ten days till his first match.  Hoping to have him hooked after it.  Keep ya'll posted.

Careful he doesn't skink you  :-D  Looking back 4+ years ago, I was a lot higher up in the overalls than I am these days. I am not really going backward, at least I hope not, but when I started I shot RVs, smokeless and traditional style. Now it's duelist, BP and cap and ball. It is a fun factor thing. I like the tinkering. I enjoy the prep work, the clean up is a little downer, but goes with the territory. I promised myself I would shoot all year with the C&Bs and here it is June and I am still good to my word, although I admit I have asked myself why and answered because it is fun.
So, I hope your brother enjoys it too and is a regular from now on. :-)
