Conicals in an Encore?
« on: October 13, 2007, 08:31:21 PM »
Does anyone here shoot conical bullets outta their Encore m.l.?
Mine loves shooting sabot SST's but I also have a mould for casting improved minies and was wondering if it's worth it?
Thanks  :)

Some QLA rifles will shoot some conicals fairly well. Some will not. Only thing I can tell you is to try it in your rifle. If you do not have good luck with the conical by itself try it with a felt wad below the bullet. My theory is that the gas passes the conical when it reaches the QLA causing the conical to become unstable. The use of a wad might stop that condition. This is just a theory at this point but the experiment would not hurt to try. I think why they shoot sabot/bullet combinations so well is the sabot seals the gas until the bullet is clear of the QLA

Keith Lewis has the right information. You need to try them in your Encore. If you can't find one the will work, you can have the QLA removed and the problem should go away. But take some time at the range and see where you are at. Good luck and have some fun.

Rather than cutting the QLA off and voiding your warranty, Its easier to order a Bergara barrel for your encore and then shoot conicals.

If the removal of the QLA voids the warranty, so what. You can order another Encore barrel for about the same price as one of the Bergara barrels. Also there is no guarantee the Bergara barrels will shoot the conical's.

Bergara does have a guarantee that they will out shoot any factory TC barrel.

From what ive seen on a couple forums, TC has major problems with their QLA's and can not get them right. Ive heard the .45 encore barrels were junk and tc wont replace the .45 barrel with another, that they will just  replace it with a .50 barrel.

i saw one guy had to send a brand new tc triump back due to a bad QLA. BAD QLA seems to be nothing new with TC.

cva, traditions, knight, dont seem to have this problem.

bigblock455, where did you get that information. I had 5  of the 50 cal Encores and never had a problem with the QLA in any of them. I had a 45 Cal Encore barrel with a QLA and it was and is a tack driver. My buddy loves it.

I don't know how Bergara guarantee that they will out shoot any factory TC barrel.

You can keep the cva, traditions and knights. I have no use for them.

I'll just have to try for myself. The reason I asked was because I was looking for an economical means of plinking and the possibility of doing some coyote hunting this winter. I would think that a 300gr SST would destroy a hide and a good lead conical would just punch a hole thru?  I'll give'r a try this wknd  ;)
As with the QLA, I've never had any issues or problems with mine.

I found a bullet the works great on deer, coyotes and other critters, I bought some 195 gr. duplex sabot's from Precision Rifle, one of our sponsors here at Graybeard.
I have taken about 18 to20 deer with the 195 gr. duplex bullets and a few fox and ground hogs with very little damage. My buddy is now shooting the 195 gr. duplex in his Encore and loves them, he took two deer last week with them.
I am now shooting them in my smokeless Savage M/L.
Plus you can keep the QLA.

redhawk you had 5 50cal barrels but did you shoot any conicals? Im talking all lead conicals such as the tc maxi hunters/ maxiballs that tc says are tack drivers out of these rifles.

www.24hourcampfire.com  for the info on the tc qla problems.

That triump was a .50 and wouldnt even shoot sabots.

I have shot tc maxi-hunters in two of the five I had owned with good results. The other 3 I never tried.

I am not saying that T/C could not of messed up a few QLA's, but I have not found one or seen one that was.

Pardon my ignorance, what is a QLA?
I also am interested in casting some conicals for my .50 Encore.

tn_junk , QLA means Quick, Load, Accurizor. It's basically a false muzzle and when you place or drop your sabot down the barrel it literally drops just over an inch down allowing you to seat the sabot with the need for a "bullet seater" .
I'll give my  Lee Improved Minies a try this weekend if I get a chance.

Well I've decided to leave the conicals for my sidelock and instead, I think I will try casting some 255gr .452 pistol bullets and shoot them in an MMP sabot, I think this combo should work quite nicely against any rabid predator such as a wiley coyote!!
