Question For Dale
« on: November 30, 2007, 09:50:39 AM »
Dale,

Did you ever get to try out the 4 x 12 x 40 AO scope you bought? Went out today with my .223 with the same scope to finish sighting in at 100 yards. The first two shots were almost touching in the 10 ring, but a little right. Adjusted the scope two clicks and never came close again. Don't know if the scope went south or something else went wrong. Everything is tight, scope and lock-up, but I went through a whole box and they were all over the place. I was using UMC 55 grain TMJ, which is probably not the best, but have a lot of it on hand that was given to me. Going to try a different brand before I give up on the scope and just wanted to know what your experience has been. Thanks.

Did you get a deer?

No I have not got a Deer yet. The scope seems to be just fine. I sighted it in on 9 power and am afraid to touch the power ring. For fear of changing point of impact. By chance have you played with the power ring on yours while sighting it in. Sounds like you have something going on for sure though. Dale

Why in the world would someone buy a variable power scope if they could not actually use it as such???

What scope are you talking about here?

Because I was in a pinch a couple days before Deer season. It was all Walmart had at the time. That's why. It is a 4x12x40 Bushnell Sportsman. Only after buying and posting here about it being a cheap scope did other people make me remember that some cheap scopes can and will change POI by playing with the power ring. I had a Banner that did that. Dale

Yeah, Dale, I did move the power ring and I could live with it changing POI a little bit for the price of the scope, but this thing was all over after the first two shots. I experimented with different powers after I started having trouble and it didn't seem to make much difference. I only had one box of ammo with me. I started with 8 power because I just can't hold it steady enough at 12. Went all the way from 4 to 12 after that. Am going to try again before I replace the scope and not fool with the power ring and see if it really makes a difference. I had the scope on a .22 Sportster before this and it worked great. Have one just like it on my .17 HMR and it is good also.

Good luck on the deer. I am still waiting for my first one, also. Passed up two that I should have taken and haven't seen anything since. Might try again in the morning for a couple of hours.

Thanks for the input.

I bought a 4-12 Simmons earlier this year at Walmart.  It was SO blurry and the parallax was SO bad I took it off my 223 and threw it in the garbage.  Then I bought a Mueller APV.  Spent twice as much, was worth infinitely more.

I have never bought a Simmons scope at Wal-Mart but I have several as well as a Simmons Red Dot and they are all great. In fact I used the Red Dot on my 19" barreled .280 Remington Handi lovingly referred to as "Thunderboomer" this fall in Maine, through 20 degree weather, snow, rain and fog with no problems. To bad you threw that new Simmons scope in the trash, they all have a lifetime warranty and they would have repaired it or replaced it for free. The next time you buy a new Simmons scope and get one you don't like please send it to me instead of throwing it in the trash. I'll send it into the factory and get a new one for it. I'll even happily pay your cost of postage to me!!....<><....:)

Hey MSP ret. He could put it up on the new Pay it forward forum. You would have to pay shipping though. Oh yea you would also have to give something away. Dale

It is a new forum that I have the votes for now. If you have something you no longer want and don't just want to throw it away you can offer it up on the new forum for free. The catch is you have to pay shipping and in return you must give something away. I PM GB yesterday that we had the votes but nothing yet. I also emailed him tonight stating the same thing. Hope it gets off the ground soon. Dale

MSP Ret,  I just checked in my safe and I still have the safe scope.  I guess I only thought real hard about throwing it away.  I'm a pack rat and hardly ever actually throw stuff away, even when I should.

I'll box it up one of these days and send it in.  It is an 8-Point scope.  I have a 3-9 8-Point that came with a Savage package rifle.  It is an excellent scope.  That is why I bought the 4-12.  Very obvious that they were not made with the same quality.  My guess is that they were made in completely different factories.  Probably completely different countries.

Modified: meant to say scope, not safe.   :-[

Good luck with that free replacement and finding a declared warranty on their website, Simmons policies have changed since Meade assumed command. :-\

If you still have the receipt, return it to Wal mart.

I've had a very similar experience with a Simmons scope I purchased there.  Based on my hunting partner's success with the 8-point on a couple Savage package rifles, I purchased a new Masters series 8-Point only to find it blurry and hazed.  I had no problem retuning it for a full refund.  You must have the receipt, however.      ;)

I 'restled with Meade Instruments for 2 days trying to send a Simmons scope back. Had a great 8-32X44 for 2 years before it went south. They asked if I had a receipt, which I didn't and told them who the h-ll keeps a scope receipt that long. They said i could send it in but would probably cost more then it was worth to fix it. Meade has their people trained very well. Went to the next level with the same results. They are more iterested in telescope sales then they are rifle scopes. By the way, their telescope are junk also. Buy a Celestron.

The last thing I said to them was "have you got your receipt for the toaster you bought", he said "that's comparing apples to oranges", I said "you mean apples to lemons and that's what your products and warranties are LEMON".

No more Simmons for me, Darn it, that was a nice scope too.

greenjean's..of course i don't know for sure if the scope is the problem..could be that & maybe other thing's..one thing i do know for sure is don't skimp on scope's..if you have a good scope then you can look at other thing's..i played the cheap scope game for a while..i won't do that again..i'll wait till i got the dough for something good..i know..i know..guy's get lucky sometime's & get that cheap scope that work's wonderful.."however" the odd's are certainley stacked against ya..when one factor's the time..gas money..wasted ammo..wondering where your p.o.i. is when you pull up on game..a $200.00 scope is cheap.. i'm not trying to come across as "harping" just sayin it the way i see it..good luck.

Dale if you are worried about your scope take it to the range and try it on different power levels. I had that same problem on a tasco. I threw it away. It free so I really didn't care. But try it and if its a problem send it to Bushnell.

Yeah, Dave

I know, but the .223 is a plinking gun and I had the scope on a .22 and it worked fine. Didn't want to buy a new one right away. I'll try again with different ammo before I give up. First problem I have ever had with a Bushnell, assuming the scope is the problem, and I have quite a few of them.

Well I have come to respect Diggers knowledge and opinions so it looks as if will be no more Simmons for me, unless I come across a nice older used one. The ones I have that a a few years old have been great but it looks as if that may have ended with Meade. Thanks to all for the info....<><....:)

greenjean's..i see what your saying if it worked on the 22..it should be fine with the  almost "nill" recoil of a 223..i have seen scope's just seemingly go..out..if this is indeed your problem..i guessing something internal on the scope gave way..hard to tell ??
