Author Topic: SHARPS RECHAMBER ?? SMOKELESS ?? (Read 921 times)

Howdy boys.
Been awhile since I posted anything here but I always got good advice and I hope since the renovation that won't have changed.
I just became the proud owner of a Pedersoli Sharps (45-70) which for any number of reasons that may seem trivial to some I'm thinking of having rechambered to 45-90 or maybe 45-110.
Well here's the question part, Does anyone or should I say can you shoot smokeless in those calibers safely even if I have to use fillers or whatnot.
I'm not yet into the "Holy Black" as Marsh calls it in my cartridge rifles but I'm sure with this sharps I'll want to at least experiment. But I want to be able to use smokeless too. Don't come back with why do I want to rechamber if I still want to use smokeless, I just do. I want to be able to drop one o' them big old long cartridges down the chamber and hear it go thunk before I lock her up. Besides, this is the Billy Dixon model and I may wanna pretend I'm Quigley or somethin'.

Accurate Arms has loads listed in their #2 manual for those cartridges using 5744 powder.

The Pedersoli rifles may or may not be strong enough for those large smokeless loads. I'd visit the Shiloh Sharps site and ask a question of those folks. They REALLY know what they're talking about. The URL is

I believe I've read that the larger BP cases are not the safest to be using with smokeless.

Don,
I dont know about the strength of the Pedersoli rifles but according to Accurate Arms this is the type of application that AA 5744 was made for. FYI the loads listed in the Accurate Arms manual are held to a max pressure of 28,000 p.s.i. for both cartridges mentioned. You might want to check and see if this presure could be handled by a rechambered Pedersoli. I Hope this helps.

I have a repro Sharps also and yes you can, but shootin black is the fun way to go. Check on sources of brass, they can get mighty expensive sometimes (the reason I stayed with 45/70).

Although I do not own a Sharps replica of any manufacture, I have shot and hunted with a Winchester '86 45-90 for years. There is no reason the you can't do this conversion. By the way, I've never shot black in my rifle, either.Only smokeless loads for me.

Sorry Don, forgot the most important part. Excellent 45-90 brass is available from Starline. Midway USA has it for $79. per 100, $84 for Nickle plated.
