Will There Ever Be a .338 WSM?
« on: November 10, 2007, 05:32:10 AM »
I would like to see a factory loading for a .338 WSM.  I am interested in getting a .338 Win Mag, but the guns that are chambered for this seem to be long and heavy.  I know I can pick up other short mag brass and size it up, but I think a factory loading for this would be just the ticket.  I really don't see the .325 WSM having much of a life, but I feel if it were a .338, it would be more popular.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this, or does anybody have any experience with a .338 WSM Wildcat?

It's called a 338 Ruger Compact Magnum.  ;D

My understanding is that the 338 WSM case didn't quite work for the Winchester engineers, and they felt the 325 was a better choice. I forget the particulars, but it had something to do with the neck length or shoulder angle vs. powder capacity/bullet weight.

I checked out that link.  And looking at the numbers in the tables I can't understand why a 150 grain SST coming out of a 24" .300 WM barrel would slow down faster than it would have if the same bullet came out of a 20" .300 RCM barrel - the MVs are the same.

150 grain SST from .300RCM 20" bbl ---> 3170fps at muzzle & 2478fps at 300yds

150 grain SST from .300WM 24"bbl ---> 3275fps at muzzle & 2384fps at 300yds.

The Win Mag starts out faster but ends up slower by 300 yards.  Something seems fishy.

Just get a .338 Win Mag.  Your more likely to find a box on a shelf than any of the Win Short mags.  If your really into the short action than the new Ruger .338 compact mag will be perfect for you, but when you pack for a trip send a box a head of you in the mail just in case.  Are you planning to reload?  If not buy the Win Mag and use the 225 soft point rounds by Remington.  I agree with the box  it is the deadliest Mushroom in the woods.

Better send it UPS ground, ammo can't be mailed. ;)

Here in Alaska everyone carries .338WM ammo.  But don't count on finding that super short stuff, especially out in the bush.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
