Author Topic: Barrel the wife can shoot....recoil sensitive (Read 1555 times)

Just acquired the T/C Encore in 300WM, and the other is staying the 209x50M..... Need a lighter rifle that the wife can take deer here in Arkansas with(they are not as big as northern whitetails). She can handle the recoil from the Savage 10FP in .308Win, but it's braked(and loud). I'm guessing that the recoil to be that of a .243Win or less.....

I'm thinking that maybe a barrel in the .257Roberts(AckleyImproved?) might just be the ticket. So the question is.... Does anyone else have a small wife that likes to shoot? If so, what barrel do you pin on for her?

My wife can't shoot the Encore stock to long. She has a bad shoulder but can shoot and loves her .243 remington another good cartridge would be a 7mm-08 fast low recoil.

That's an easy one. 7mm08 will work, very low recoil and bigger than a 243. JMHO

You know, there is nothing wrong with and, in fact, a lot to recommend wearing hearing protection while hunting.

Use the Google search with the GBO option selected it works very well.

Changing to another chambering in the Encore is not going to make the rifle lighter only the recoil. Perhaps that's all you really meant. But if you want a lighter rifle as well as lighter recoil go to the Contender or G2 and chamber a barrel to 7TCU or 7-30 Waters.

Excellent choices recommended by GB. If you are sticking with the Encore; then the 243/6mm is the way to go. My 15 year old daughter loves my 6mm and she is very accurate with it.

+1 on the hearing protection. It takes all of 5 seconds to slip on a pair of ear muffs prior to taking your shot.

How do the 7-08 and the 243 compare in the recoil dept? I would think that the 243 would be lighter (smaller bullet).

A light rifle will recoil more than a heavy one, but a heavy one is a pain to carry around in the woods.

When I'm hunting, I carry my firearms more then shoot them, so Id go for a lighter gun, and accept a little more recoil when it comes time to shoot.

Other light recoiling rounds are the 6.5 X 55mm Swede, and the 7.5 X 55mm SR for the K31.
The Swede gets my vote as it is very accurate, and lite. Its a .264 caliber bullet, and the 7.5 is a .308 but with much less pressure.

Also the plastic stock on the encore may weigh less than the wooden ones. Just a thought...

For a given Outside Diameter, like the Encore where barrels are profiled the same on the outside (there are exceptions),

the bigger bore diameter makes a lighter rifle because there is a large hole (ie, less steel) while the outside stays the same. However, lighter weight + larger bore = increased recoil. So there is a tradeoff in weight vs. recoil.

I see no reason to choose a 7.5x55 over a 308, as I have both and they kick about the same.

A prohunter buttstock will do wonders if you don't already have one. After that, as suggested, the 7-30 Waters, 257 Roberts, 243 Win are all good choices. So is the 7x57 Mauser and 6.5x55. However, the easiest one to find ammo for is the 243.

I vote for the 7-08 as well. I don't know if T/C makes barrels in .300 Savage, but if they do, the round still works well on deer, and is a cream-puff to shoot. Good Luck

What does the average Encore weigh? I only have the muzzle-loader barrel with the plastic stock, and its not that bad to carry around.

6.5x55 Swede. Great ballistics and mild on the recoil.

We have a 243 for my 12 year old daughter. she is weighs about 80 pounds and is 4'6". she shoots 2.5" groups. she has never complained about recoil, even after shooting 20-30 rounds at the range. she is too short to shoot a bolt action gun, the action is too long and she can't get up to the scope. we use the regular encore stock with out problems, we do add a bit of height on the stock to raise her eye up.

she shot her first animal this year too, an antelope at 250 yards.

my son and I where out shooting the 243 encore that we set up for him , i am really surprised at how little recoil there is , that thing is a pussy cat and it groups pretty good to , getting 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards with just plain old fed. 100 gr bullets and a 2x7 scope

I second the 6.8 spl.
Real easy on the shoulder,and it doesn't seem as load as the others.I have shot 4 deer with it and they went down within 75 yds,2 within 30.Real mild recoil.You wont go wrong with one.
Yes i reload,but,they were all shot with factory.Pan.

I would also have to say the 6.8 SPC. I have one in the G2 configuration. I have killed a hog with it. I am loading Barnes Triple shock but I heard that the Speer Accubond is coming out in the 6.8 SPC. The recoil is very light and the 6.8 SPC shoots a .277 Caliber Bullets.
