Shock Wave Field Performance?
« on: November 05, 2007, 03:02:26 PM »
I used the T/C 250 gr. Shock Wave Super Glides last week for the initial range trip with my NEF Stainless Sidekick.
They loaded easily and shot very very accurately.
Being this was the initial sight in, time did not permit me to shoot any of the other sabots I brought along.

I'm more than happy with the Shock Wave's range performance but I'd like to hear anyone's experience regarding their field performance.
Good, not so good, and if not so good, what you've found as a better alternative?

Thanks

I've seen three deer shot with them. One made 30yds. One dropped right there (high hit, spine shot) The last one ran 20 yds,and piled up. I've learned that if you don't want a deer to run after the shot, then shoot them in the front shoulder (a little high)! If I was taking this shot, and planning on shattering the shoulder blade, and damaging the spinal colum, I would go with the Bonded Shock Waves.

I can't tell you about the bullet as I have not recovered one, but 5 dead deer has me convinced they work.   ;)

I am also curious with the field performance, I get excellent accuracy with them, but some of the field reports
have me a little nervous, I am shooting the 250gr. bonded. More info would be appreciated.

I've shot deer with the 200,250, and 300 grain Shockwaves. Not one of them did any complaining, nor lived to tell about it. One traveled 60 yards, the rest averaged about 30 yards on boiler room shots. Never recovered a 250 or 300, but did recover a 200 that went through both shoulders and came to rest just under the hide on the off side, IIRC it retained 135 grains.

"I'm more than happy with the Shock Wave's range performance but I'd like to hear anyone's experience regarding their field performance."

I've killed six deer and about ten hogs with my Encore and the 250 grain SST/Shockwave bullets.   Nearly all were bang-flops and all were recovered within 20 yards of where they were hit.  Here is a bullet recovered from a hog shot at a transit lasered distance of 192 yards.  i know that is really pushing the envelope but the light was good, there was no wind and i had a good rest.  The bullet broke two ribs going in and did not exit.

The load was a mild one-90 grains of JSG.  The sabot was the short red one.  It is very hard to load in my gun.  It is also a tack driver.

I have had good luck with 300 grain shock wave shot a buck 80 yards and he went 20 yards and piled up ,work great in my encore.
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

Most of my shots have been pass-thrus with lots of damage and deer that don't go far.  I shoot the non-bonded 200gr.  I've only recovered one, I think it was a 120 yd shot and I recovered the jacket fully expanded on the offside shoulder after a lot of bone passage.  The lead fragmented and exited the skin.

Yes, the lead separated cleanly from the jacket, but after a lot of penetration and usually I they don't even stay in.  I had one that I hit head-on at 272 yds last season and dropped her in her tracks, couldn't find the bullet but I know it ended up all the way back in the stomach.

I have shot 4 deer with the 250 grain shockwaves loaded over 3 T7 pellets, 3 of the deer dropped in their tracks and the other one made two leaps covering 20 yards total and was dead when it hit the ground after the second leap. I got complete pass-throughs on all 4 deer.
