I have been visiting with this group of people for several years now if you include the old H&R board. And I have to say that I am under the impression that this is a very safety conciencious group of shooters and hunters. Most of you have been shooting and hunting for many years, and I'm confident you all know the rules of safe shooting. So I don't want to insult anyone by going over a few things, and setting some rules in regard to safety for this shoot.
Everyone knows the Ten Commandments of Safe Gun Handling, so I'm not going to insult anyones intelligence by going over those here.
But, there are going to be some unique circumstances at a shooting event like this one that I think everyone should be aware of.
1. Always be sure of your target and what is beyond it. This is very flat country, and there may be a farm house five miles beyond that fat little dog you want to take out. Your bullet can ricccochet.
2. Always unload your rifle when you're through with a set. Place it in a case of some sort, or insert an unloaded chamber indicator. If you don't have an unloaded chamber indicator, remove the bolt. Put the rifle in a safe, out-of-the-way place.
3. Always wear hearing and eye protection weather shooting or spotting. We may be shooting in pretty high temps, and some may be shooting hot handloads that were loaded in cooler climates. Accidents can and will happen.
4. Unload all rifles and handguns before you put them in your vehicle. I'm sure that the game warden would love to catch about ten vehicles all traveling with loaded firearms. Oklahoma's wild life department would thank you for your donations.
5. I like to drink beer. But no drinking before or during shooting sessions. This is self explanatory.
These are only five so far, but I'm sure I'll come up with more rules to spoil your fun
If anyone else can think of anything, please chime in.
