What cartridges are 1.4 inch and bottleneck

Have the opportunity to hunt in Illinois in a dream place. They have a straight wall cartridge of any length or bottleneck not longer than 1.4 inches. I have a 30 herrett but, this is 1.6 inches. What cartridges are out there that are bottleneck and 1.4 inches?

not many. The wssm's are 1.67 and the 223 is 1.7 case length. The ppc cartridges I suppose. The 7.62x39,6.5 grndel would have short enough cases. The whispers should be close. Of course the 256 winchester,440 corbon would all be in that class.

I think that the 300 whisper is one of the few bottleneck that qualifies in illinois.  SSK is a sponsor and the creator of the 300 whisper.

My thoughts too.

Heck, a good pistol caliber carbine works wonders for anything up to 100 yards or so, and a 45-70 with the right load would be useful a lot farther than that.

I live in KY. My friend is a farmer in Illinois. I checked into Illinois fish and Wildlife regulations and no rifle allowed but handguns of 30 caliber or more with either a bottleneck  design or 1.4 inches or staightwall of any length. His land is such that a shot of 200 yards could present itself. that is why I wanted a bottleneck cartridge because it tends to have more distance than a straightwall. He has lots of woods to where a shot over 60 yards would never occur. I have a T/C with a 7 tcu/30-30,30 herrett and 357 magnum. The 357 magnum is only legal barrel I can hunt with. I wouldn't consider this much past 80 yards.
 I was curious about what cartridges were out there for future references. I wouldn't have time to order/load test etc this year. I will stick with 357 for wooded shot and not go the field route. the cost of out of state license will be about $300. This is something I am considering too as to make the trip or not. I have been to his farm and scouted around. Very plentiful deer!

Ted, if you use a 357 mag be sure your loads will produce 500 ft-lbs at the muzzle. preferably carry a factory box with this info(180's at about1150 fps) Good Hunting

If you could find a friend with a 460 S&W it is good out to 200 yards with the factory 200gr ammo.  Or you could try to find a 460 barrel for your TC.

I would agree with Lloyd and recommend taking a look at Gary Reeder's 41 GNR specifically (44 mag necked down to 41 cal.).  Loaded with 170 gr bullets in an Encore or Contender would cover you out to 200yds.  He also has a 356 GNR (41 mag necked down to .357)that I have no practical experience with but on paper it looks good. He's quick on his turnaround on custom barrels too.  There are even a couple guys reloading factory headstamped brass for both in case you don't reload.

The 300 Whisper is not a 200 yd deer cartridge in my opinion.   I took one deer with it when I lived in Illinois, the shot was at 30-40 yds and resulted in a dead deer but very little blood trail.  I was very satisfied with my 357 Maximum, but never took a shot past 50 yds. as I was woods hunting.
