Author Topic: I had a BFR in 45-70 follow my home today. (Read 2149 times)

I went to my local gun shop with a buddy to pick him up a holster. My buddy that works in the shop pulled out a 10 inch BFR in 45-70. I have been wanting one but just never got around to ordering one. Well I looked at it and I thought, I think I need this gun. So I bought it. Now on the way home I was wondering, what the hell am I going to do with another big bore handgun? Well, now I have to go hunting with it so it will earn it's place in my gun safe. Now another gun to work up loads for.
My next thought is, do I scope it, put a red-dot on it or just leave it with open sights???

I was just thinking that you really do need another big bore...glad you did that....as to the scope.. it is a large weapon, so it could be scoped without throwing off its light quick handling qualities... It should be impressive.

Maybe when I Graduate up a few calibers?

How does the 45-70 do on game out of a handgun? What kind of range can an average shooter get out of one on say deer size game?

I am not new to shooting the 45-70 in a BFR, I have shot one quit a few times. We were shooting at 100 yards with very good accuracy. I installed a red dot sight on it tonight, it is an Ultra-dot Match-dot like I have on my BRF in 500 Mag. I am going to my land in West Virginia for a week starting tomorrow so I won't get to the range with it any time soon. But once I get back, I'm headed to the range.

I will be bow hunting in West Virginia on my land, hope I see some good ones.

Congratulations on the new toy! I have been shooting a .45-70 Contender for a while now and really enjoy this round. I would go with a scope on this gun if I were you. From the bench, with handloads, my Contender will do 1.5" with both Hornady 300 gr JHP and Nosler 300 gr PSP with a 4X Burris scope at 100 yards. I would not get anywhere near these groups with open sights.

pab1, I thought about the scope, but the match dot sight has a 2 MOA dot and can be adjusted to an 8 MOA dot. I have one on my 500 Mag BFR and have no problems at 100 yards with shooting 1 1/2 to 2 inch groups off the bench. I do have a scope on my 460 Mag so that is my long range handgun.

Actually it took me by surprise, it walked in the back door. LOL

I can't wait to get back home to take it to the range, I have been on vacation to my land here in West Virginia.

LOL, I am going to the range Wednesday or Thursday and see how it does. I have two boxes of Federal 405 gr. cast bullets to shoot up so I can do some reloading for it.

Sir, I have had one for years, and wouldn't trade it for gold. It means as much to me as the custom guns do. Never have put a scope on it, and probably never will. One of the few I have that I can still shoot well with open sights. The gun has had everything from 250 grain to 500 grain bullets run through it. First deer with it was small spike at just short of 80 yards, and dropped like a rock. So has everything else it has been used on. Have often thought about getting another just to put a scope on to see just how far it could reach. Have fun with it.

Well it has been raining the past 3 day and I could not go to my out door range and shoot that new 45-70, but I did go to my local indoor range and was shooting at 25 Yards. I had 2 boxes of Federal 405 gr. 45-70 rounds in my ammo room and took them to the range to get the gun on paper and to see how the accuracy is. Well I am very happy with the accuracy so far. I kept all the shots in a 1 inch circle at 25 yards after I got the gun sighted in. I was shooting off a bench rest, I have an Ultra dot, Match dot on it> I changed out the ugly black grips for a set of Hogue wood Pau Ferro grips. I can't wait to take it out to 50 and 100 yards to se what it will do.

Redhawk1, Sounds like you've got an excellent shooter and that's some great shooting on your part too. I bet changing the grips really made the gun a lot easier to look at. I sure would like to see a picture of it!

The only thing lacking... if that is the word.. in the BFR is the rubber grips sort of clash with the single action "look". what kind of grips did you put on it

are you going to use the 300 grain cast in it ? Hope you like it on the range... I have no doubt it is a performer in the field... do you think it will be different than the 460 ? I am anxious for a great range report... I think at one point I may have asked before for a comparison of the bfr and the sw, once the upgrades are done. Fit Finish. Accuracy. Perceived Recoil..

classy grips RH1.. I especially like the way it closes the space behind the trigger guard so "no knockee de fingahs" ( been studying chinese, see ).......
it looks really cool too.... might have to try those again had similar on a SBH and loved those for many years... would like to try that match dot sight too....
