Has anyone seen or have any .338 RCM brass
« on: December 05, 2007, 11:39:39 AM »
I'm looking for someone who has .338 Ruger Compact Magnum brass.  I've looked at pictures but would like to have a measurement drawing or dimensions.  This case has a bit of intrigue to me.  More powder capacity than the 338-06 and ballistics approaching the .338 Win Mag, which is plenty for most game.  The .338-06, really the .333 OKH, was designed to imitate the .333 original Rimless Nitro or Jeffrey.  It had an excellent reputation in Africa on plains game and was highly respected.  The .338 Ruger CM would easily duplilcate .333 Jeffrey ballistics and would be an excellent Alaskan round.

Isn't it just the standard run of the mill .338 Winchester magnum minus the belt? From what I've read that's all they've done is take the belt off the regular magnum cases and rename them. I guess until we see some dimensions we won't know for sure but the article I read indicated that's all that Hornady did.

The Guns and Ammo article by Craig Boddington indicates the .338 Ruger to be based on the .375 Ruger with the same base diameter of .532, the same as the belted rim cases.  However, the brass was shortened to fit in short length actions like the .243 and .308 Win.  I'm curious as to the neck length for reloading of heavier than factory bullets in the short action.  "The .338 RCM (left) with its parent case, the .375 Ruger (right) as shown in the article at the link below.  "External dimensions remain similar, with the case shortened to 2.015 inches and necked down to accept a .338-inch bullet."  Quote by Boddinton in article.  I still find some intrigue with this design.  I'd rather it was a .338 bore on the .333 Rimless Nitro case though.  http://www.gunsandammomag.com/ammunition/hornady_110107/

If that's the case the only way it's gonna come close to matching .338 Win. ballistics is using Hornady's light mag technology. They also use it ont he .338 Win. Mag I think for sure Federal does so it can't possibly match that at equal pressures.

The brass or ammo isn't available yet if you go by the Hornady website, it's "coming soon", brass isn't listed at all. Midway lists the ammo as "coming soon", but no brass is listed.
