Personaly i've been loading 200 grain .358 bullets into shot cups backwards.

How does that work?

Why not pointy end first?

loading .358 bullet backwards? One way to make a wadcutter I guess.  Gives me a thought, Federal Highbrass 3" 410 shot shells, they have 11/16 oz of shot, so the powder should be close for a 200 to 230  grain bullet.  Open crimp, dump shot and load a .358 or whatever size lead bullet fits the best. Same idea as the Lyman slugs using regular shotgun wads for sabots.  At $9 for box of 5 for the Brenneke Slugs might as well give it a try.

I generally consider CTD "cheaper-than-nobody," but I just ordered a bunch of Brenneke slugs:

37898 Ammo .410 Bore, Brenneke Magnum Silver Slug, 3", 1/4 Ounce Rifled Slug, 1755 fps, 5 Round Box 5 $5.70

Interesting especially since 410 slugs are half the weight. Check Veral's thread on cut shells.

Sometimes I forget little pieces of the puzzle, like you need rifling for a sabot to work.  So if I remove the birdshot and place a bullet into the shot cup I need a rifled choke tube.  Or maybe the 45ACP liner barrel I am trying to put together could be a fully rifled 410 barrel instead? I wonder what would be the best caliber donor barrel for a 410 rifled slug barrel project?  Time for some research.

Wreck, can you help me on finding the thread from Veral that you mentioned?

thanks

437 so grains to the ounce.  I'm loading the 200 grainer as if it was a 1/2 oz. shot load.  fits in the 2 1/2" shell just fine.   The reason the bullet is pointy side down is to help stabilize the bullet, without rifling the bullet will want to travel heavy side first.  On par with a heavy 357 mag round.

tom, federal's load data for their .410 claims 334 ftlbs. @ 75 yds, i think the girls will do just fine with what you've made.  if all else fails fit one of those .45/.410 barrels on an sb2 work up a little LC load, carry a spent .410 in your pocket for the warden to see. ;D (i didn't say that, my keyboard is possessed.)

John,

Don't give me any ideas, I have a friend who specializes in putting liner rifle barrels inside of 20 ga Pardner barrels.  I could be like an unnamed friend of mine from Athens Co.  He was first introduced to me as the best deer hunter in SE Ohio.   I asked him what gun he used and his response was "8MM Mauser".  I said I don't think that is legal, and he said neither is hunting in July! ;)

found out last year that a 22 LR is legal for deer in NC. Not sure if that says something about how smart our fish and game people are or how wimpy our deer are....

I have seen some very large deer in NC... not to mention many Target shooter records are held by NC natives 8) There are a lot of good shooters out of the old state.

I retract the remark. That really does make it OK . There was a guy in Va. ( police man i was told ) that used a full auto for damage control . It ain't hunting at that point .

I know about a 1/2 dozen farmers that protect their crops from the deer.  The weapons vary from a 22LR, 9MM handgun to a bunch of different centerfires.

I would like to be able to hunt deer during warm weather, but I wouldn't like it enough to go in to debt to  become a farmer. ;)

BB,  Does your 410 barrel still have a choke in it or is it a cylinder bore now ?  I just had a idea of taking a old 7/16 ths reamer I have and grinding off most of the flutes to the bore diameter ( clearance ) of a .410 and leave a small section of the reamer flutes with the leading edge sharpened to cut a spiral .
It would be something like a rifled choke at the end of the barrel ?    Jed

Jed,

Should be a cylinder bore as it started life as a 26" full choke and I had 4" cutoff.

Could go fully rifled 410, find a 41 Cal barrel and do another insert project.  4D has the 410 reamers.  Shoot all brass cases with a nice cast .410 bullet?
