Anyone ever try this?
« on: February 01, 2008, 01:49:53 PM »
Might be a bad winters day idea, but has anyone ever tried loading a .452" diameter shockwave or sst ml bullet into a .45 colt, or .454 casull? Seems like it might be worth trying. I checked some shockwaves I had with calipers and were dead on .452".  maybe this is better suited for the handloading forum?

Last fall I loaded a few of those over H110 for use in my .454 Encore barrel--and they worked just fine and were accurate. Haven't chronographed yet. Since they have no crimp groove, they would not be good in revolvers. Gene

Do you feel the ML bullets have a thick enough jacket ?  From what I understand the 454 and 460 both need a special bullet with a thick jacket  , like the Hornady XTP/ Mags.........I believe Grumlkin, not sure I spelled his  ID right, uses ML bullets in his 460, he was well satisfied with them.  I was gonna try them, but chickened out...I'm just not sure about the pressures.  Maybe someone can help us.     Mike

The thick jacket is needed in revolvers---especially FA M83 to keep from splatting in the forcing cone. Works just fine in an Encore barrel. Consider terminal velocity and terminal performance and load accordingly. In my short Encore barrel, I estimated that based on chronoed loads using same weight bullets I was close to muzzle loader velocities. Gene
