Has anyone ever tried jb welding on scope bases?
« on: September 30, 2007, 05:25:12 PM »
Has anyone ever tried it? all it would have to hold would be a 30mm red dot. Would they hold up to 8mm recoil? I figure the worst that could happen to my free mauser would be having to grind the jb weld off and re-paint the area.

For awhile there was a humorous picture circling the forums of a scope held on by JB Weld and hose clamps

I once used it IN ADDITION to the screws on a Thompson Center Contender. When I later removed the screws to take the base off that was some kinda tough job to get it off. I did but man was that sucker stuck down tight. I honestly think the JB alone would have held but I'd really not want to be the one to find out. A scope in the face is not a fun thing to happen.

I had a friend you used JB weld on an aperture sight on a military gun.  He didn't want to drill and destroy it.  It worked so well that when he wanted to take it off he had to hammer it off and grind the JB off.
You can't even heat it off, it is made to fix a cracked engine block.
I would have no problems securing a scope mount with JB

I have tried it on stuff and had crummy luck not sure why as I have used other epoxies with success. I am wondering how you will keep things straight and clamped while the stuff is drying mostly straight?? If it was me I would take it to a gunsmith and have it drilled and tapped. Might cost you a few bucks but then it would be done right.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I've used JB Weld on lots of stuff, it is one of the very few products that actually work as claimed. I've used it to temporarily mount a scope on a muzzleloader. And it is very easy to remove, just heat it till it starts to smoke, give it a sharp tap and off it comes. Then clean off the remaining glue with steel wool or burlap cloth while still hot. If you let it cool it will be as strong as ever but working it hot you can just rub it off with no damage at all to the blued surface. To get any adhesive to hold you must first get the surfaces absolutely clean and oil free, do that and JB Weld will amaze you.   PS--- NOT THE "QUICK" KIND!!
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
