Winchester Silver Tips
« on: November 05, 2007, 03:22:07 PM »
Anybody here use these?  I just picked up two boxes at Walmart for $4.50.  I have never heard much good about this bullet, but figure I will probably just use them for practice.  They are 270 Win, 130 Grns.

I love them in 30-30. My wifes uncle has used them for years in his 30-06 and he loves them. I may be mistaken but I think I read that Jack O'Conner used the 270 Silvertips and had good things to say about them.

They don't kill nothing anymore.  They used to drop everything under the sun, but since we have premium bullets now, they have stopped killing animals.  Maybe if all the super swift tungsten tipped uranium filled extra hard copper clad bullets were no longer made, the silver tips would kill again.

In the catagory of "cheap" ammo, the Winchester power points shoot best out of my 270. I use them quite a bit for hog hunting, and they work just fine.

At $13/box, can't complain about the price.

I know a couple of guys that use them. Kills deer dead. O'conner shot moose and elk with them.

If you can find the GUN TEST Magazine article on premium bullets, you might start using the power point and silvertips again.  They both got darn good results in all three test mediums.

They have given me the best accuracy for any 180 grain bullets so far out of my -06.  I've been moving over the barnes TSX bullets, and they are definitely giving them a run for their money though.

thumbcocker,

I am sorry sir, but I now cannot find that specific article.  I believed that it was in gun-tests but I looked and cannot find it. It covered the Nosler, Speer Grand slam, Rem core lock, and silvertip.  Plus a few others.  They shot into bone, water and gelatin, and reported on the results.  But I did find a good article in gun tests on premium bullets - just type "premium bullets" into the google search engine.

ps  sorry it took a while to get back to you but I was off for four days
