1974 H&R 12 gauge muzzle loader
« on: June 08, 2009, 01:21:06 PM »
I recently came into possession of a 1974 H&R 12 gauge muzzle loading shotgun.

I found it in an *abandoned home and appears never to have been fired, though I will know for sure when I clean it up.  It was stored in a dry location, barrel up.  I'm interested in selling it, but have no idea how to do this on the Internet and avoid selling it to a felon or other nasty customer.  Does anyone have some good ideas for me on this topic?  Is it legal to sell a rifle or other weapon on the Internet?

I can post some pictures of it if necessary.

I contacted H&R about it, giving them the serial number and a small description of the weapon, but all they knew about it was that it had been manufactured in 1974.

Thanks for any help.

*A client of mine recently bought the property and did not want the shotgun when we found it.  It was given to me.

Mike,

Older Huntsmans may or may not be considered a firearm, if it can be fitted with centerfire barrels, it is a firearm and must be sold in accordance with ATF laws just like any other firearm, I would consider it a firearm as opposed to a muzzleloader only until you learn otherwise. As for selling on the internet, it's done all the time, but the transfer of the firearm to the new owner must be done thru a dealer if it isn't done face to face with a resident of your state,  IF you learn it is a firearm. If it's a muzzleloader only, it may be transferred directly to the new owner providing their state doesn't preclude it. They're listed and sold here in the classifieds all the time, but buying/selling/trading isn't allowed in any discussion forum here on GBO.

Tim,

Thank you.  I haven't a clue how to go about this, and I was worried about making sure I followed the law in this.  I'll check out the classifieds.

Maybe someone more familiar with that model Huntsman will be able to tell you what specifically it is, I know it's been said that those muzzleloader only Huntsmans had a very wide or large firing pin that won't work on a cartridge primer and others have said that the underlug of a centerfire barrel won't fit in the frame, but not having a firearm to compare that to makes it kinda hard for you to know the difference!!! If you could take a pic of the frame without the barrel off or the action open showing the firing pin, maybe we can give you some advice on which way to go, pic posting help is in a sticky in the classified forum.

I'll take some pictures of it tomorrow evening, but would it be appropriate to post them here on this particular topic?

Sure, as long as you aren't trying to sell it in this thread, that would need to be done in the H&R classified forum.  ;)
