.357 maximum???
« on: November 15, 2007, 02:24:55 PM »
Hi
I have a friend that is looking for a 357 max. in a lever gun. I told him that I had never heard of one... But I thought that maybe someone here could help.  Any one got any ideas where to look, maybe even a custom built?
Any help would be cool!
Thanks
jim

After he gets a second job, he can check Wild West Guns on the web.  After that there are not really any options.  The Max is too long for a M92 action and too much pressure for a M94 or 336.  Closest replacement- a .35 Remington 336.

Hi
Thanks for the input...I passed it on to him. Have you ever hear of a rifle chamber in the 357 maximum?

Here's a bit about the 357Maxi in a Marlin.

http://www.riflemagazine.com/magazine/article.cfm?tocid=1375&magid=95

H&R made the Handrifle in 357Maxi for a year or two, it's a real popular rechamber for the 357Mags, also.

Just out of curiousity, would the 336 cycle 360 Dan Wesson ammo as an alternative to the Maxi? The standard 357Mag is 1.29" in length and the 357Maxi measures 1.6 " in length. The 360 Dan Wesson is 1.41 inches.

It could probably handle the DW with just a bit of feed work. I know it's been said before, but why are people so fascinated with a 357 max levergun when the 35 remington will do everything and more and at lower pressures right out of the box available at any decent gun shop? Truth be told firing a 357 mag in a rifle elevates  it to a whole new level, that is pretty impressive in its own right.

Moxgrove-same reason I'd like to get a lever gun in .445SM. I have a Dan Wesson in that caliber. Like to have a lever gun that could shoot the same cartridge. (must be the cowboy in me)  gypsyman
