What is the best barrel length for a 357 Maximum
« on: November 17, 2007, 02:39:11 PM »
I am looking to acquire a 357 Max barrel for the collection.  I plan on using the barrel primarily for deer hunting.  I now use 10 and 14 inch barrels for the Contender and am comfortable with the handling characteristics of both lengths.  I am looking at getting a T/C factory barrel in this caliber.

It really depends on your preference and style of hunting.
The 14" will give you a little more speed and complete powder burn over the 10"
If I am hunting from a tree stand I like the 14" but when I am hunting from the ground I like the 10" because it is a little quicker and easier to handle and a little lighter

I have a 12" 357 Maximum and really like it.  Happy medium between the 14" & 10" barrels.

O only have 1 12" barrel and that is an encore 45/410 barrel and it is a good length not quite as handy as a 10 but not as bulky as a 14.

At one time I had a 12" 357 magnum on order but it fell trough on me.

I've been using a 10" barrel , seems good to me.  A lot easier to carry than the 14 " in 22 LR I use for squirrel .  It will shoot 2-3 inch groups at 100yds , and ring the 6X6 gong at 150 yards, thats good enough for me, at least for deer.  Carry it in a bandaleer , kinda slung under my left arm, works for me....good luck
