Problem, Will not cock

I picked up an Ultra in .25-06 a couple of months ago.  I fired 2 boxes during sight in and practice no problems.  Shot a doe opening morning, again no problems. 

Sitting in my stand on Friday and a buck walks out and begs to be shot.  Went to cock the gun and it would not cock.  I am mad that I missed the deer but more made that the gun malfunctioned.  Any thought as to what the problem could be?  What has been the experience with sending guns into H&R for repair?

I recently changed the stock on my Handi 223.  It was a beautiful piece of wood for a Winchester Model 12 shotgun that my Dad had but never put on the shotgun and it required me making a longer mounting bolt.  As I shaped the stock to fit the Handi, the stock became a little shorter and just about the time I got the fit right I found that it would not cock.  The mounting bolt was interfering with the hammer travel.  You could try removing the butt pad and loosen the mounting bolt little-by-little while you try to cock the gun to see if it makes a difference.  Maybe H&R forgot the washer.

A broken transfer bar has been known to prevent the hammer from being cocked, H&R will fix it or you can fix it yourself if you're the DIY type, see Perklo's trigger hone info in the FAQs on trigger group work. My new 308 Survivor did the same thing the first time I tried to shoot it.It was the transfer bar binding and trying to fall out. I leaned the rifle on its left side and the bar stayed in place long enough to shoot it.If you lean it over on the right side,the bar will fall out in your hand.I called NEF and they mailed me a new one and I installed it myself. Give them a call and they'll make it right with you.  Digger

Well, you guys will probably  believe this and I will post pictures later to prove it but I took the buttstock off to have a look and found a rock in the action.  It appears to be a rock but it may be welding slag but it is stuck in the space between the buttstock mounting bolt hole and the action.  It is too big to fall completly out so I will have to file it or take out the trigger group.  Not sure what I will do other than post pictures because it was an unexpected find.
