I LOVE hunting javelina. I've taken them on various occasions with a 5" Smith 629 .44 Mag., and FA's in .41 and .454... admittedly more gun than was necessary, but that's what I was carrying, because hogs were also in the area each time.

I used to take them with a 45 when I was in el centro America, often as the OD while sitting on the hood of a jeep watching them cross the road in front of us but then started using a 38 Super (faster).  Took some in northern Texas at a rod and gun club I belonged to outside Mineral Wells - 38 Super and 357.  The excitement for me was just trying to get them into my sights for a good shot.  Mikey.

Here is another javelina with a .45.  He was a tough old rascal who took a lung hit and two followup shots in the neck before he expired.

A couple friends and I hit the Arizona HAM season every time we can get drawn. The last time, we stopped over at Boot Hill in Old Tombstone and took pictures of our deceased animals. Wish I could find them. They were a hoot! We've also hunted them on the San Carlos reservation with good success. With their weak eyes, they're a good animal to start handgun hunting for the first time.

Does a Wild Boar and a TC Contender 44mag count?  Butchered weight was 180 lbs of pork.  I couldnt give it all away, so I had to eat it......

No problem!!! They are not bad at all, once you marinate them, then smoke them and put plenty of chili sauce on 'em.. ;)

I've killed 2 with handguns, to date one at 50 yards with my .357 Mag. revolver and one at seven yards with my 7mm BR T/C Encore.

At one point in my life I hunted Javelins regularly, but got away from it when I moved to this part of West Texas.  With the exception of a few I ran across in the Big Bend area while rock hounding I hadn't seen one in years.  Two years ago I begin seeing them on my place just West of Abilene TX, the game folks said they had migrated north due to the drought conditions in south Texas.  My son killed a large boar last year, I had forgot how they smell, but we dressed it and cooked a portion of it.  There was no way we could prepare it that it didn't retain some of the smell.........it was so bad the dogs wouldn't eat it.

Years ago when we killed one it went to an old Mexican lady who made it into tamales, she mixed it with venison or pork, they were very tasty, and with all the spice you didn't smell them.  I won't be killing anymore until I find someone who can cook them...................does anyone know of an available, good looking, over sexed lady, who owns a bass boat,  4x4 and a liquor store and knows how to cook Javelin?

I just got my tags for AZ in the mail last week and I think they were $250.  The website they have on the envelope is www.azgfd.gov
I am going to bring my Contender in .223 with some 60 grain Nosler partitions. and possibly a .22 Hornet as the rifle.  How tough are they?  Should I bring something that makes a bigger hole?   .357 or .44 mag?
I can not get it to act as a link.  I'm a low tech redneck.  See you there in Feb.
