What would you get? 17 HM2 or HMR?
« on: November 01, 2007, 11:28:24 AM »
Which one and why?

Speak up for those who really have both.

Maybe this has already been a thread.... Sorry if it has been repeated.

If you have one, do you wish you'd got the other?

I have both in Sportsters and 3 other 17hmrs in bolt guns, the 17M2 is cheaper to shoot at $4-$6 a box, but still not as cheap as a 22Lr, but every bit as accurate and flat shooting as the 17hmr within its respective range, the 17M2 to about 100-125yds, where the 17hmr is good well past that, same bullets, 17gr @ ~2000fps for the M2, compared to ~2600fps for the Hmr. The Hmr has more bullet options too, Vmax, TNT hollow points and FMJ, in 17gr and 20gr in a couple flavors. If you want cheaper to shoot and slightly limited range, go for the M2, if you want a bit more power and range and don't mind $11-$12 a box for ammo, go for the Hmr, or get both and use the one you want, when ya want. ;) Complete rifles can be had for as little as $110-$140, not much more than an accessory barrel for $98. ;)

I have a 17 HMR Sportster.  It is a great rifle. I have a Marlin 917 M2 Bolt action for my M2 shooting right now.
If I could have one (the 17 HMR or the 17 M2) I would choose the 17 M2 for my shooting. I think the ultimate
setup would be to get a Sportster and have barrels in both calibers. I am going to get a 17M2 barrel in the
future for my Sportster. That is going to be a fun rifle! ;D

I had a the 17 HMR when it first came out in a heavy barrel NEF, it did a great job on PDs out to 175-200 yards. Traded it bu I still have a 17 HMR on a CZ, Anschutz, Chipmunk and also a converted 77/22 mag to 17 HMR... I have about the same set up with the 17 Mach 2 only I also have a Marlin semi auto (for them charging PD pups)...

Darn hard to pick one over the other without knowing what you will be using it for....

My 17 Mach 2 gets shot the most mostly due to less noise and as mild shooting as the HMR is the 17 HM2 is milder... I use em mostly to help farmers try to keep there pastures in check with the PDs so noise id a factor for the closer shots...

During a feild test of a real small 17 centerfire my son who was 11 at the time tried out the 17 HM2 for the first time. it is a converted 77/17 HM2... Prone and off bipods in the spring when pups were running all over the place we would pick a pair and he would take the one on the right while I would take the one on the lest at the count of three... Pretty soon we was shooting a long ways out there with only a couple misses... I got out the lieca RF and it said 133 yards... I was impressed at that point to say the least with the 17 HM2... I told my son give me that thing... I had to try it out... Been a favorite ever since and when it is not windy we make good shots out to 160 plus yards... It just puts em to sleep with min noise...

The HMR seems like a cannon after shooting the HM2 all day though.... Quite a bit more destruction too

I have had 2 17MII traded one they were both extremely accurate really want the 17HMR but keep getting sidetracked by center fire barrels but still looking for the 17HMR I say get both or if just one get the 17HMR it will do what the MII does plus some more. kurt

I had the same decision you are making not too long ago and went with the HMR over the M2 because the four local gun shops as well as wall mart all carry it and only one carries the M2.  Also out of a scoped single shot rifle I like the longer (if only slightly) case.  The longer case makes it easier to load the rifle.  The second part of the decision was that the HMR is offered in more bullet types and weights not to mention four of the guys I shoot with have the HMR and I can steal/ borrow ammo from them on the range or in the field if needed.

As I was starting to write this post I read mcwoodduck's post. It would seem he and I made the same decision for the same reasons in different states.I guess brilliant minds run on the same track. I have a 17 HMR Handi on the way right now. 17MII seems to be just a middle of the road between 22 Stingers and 17 HMR. HMR is more of a true varmint round. JMHO - F50
