Need Powder Charge for a 572gr Sharps PP Reload
« on: September 20, 2007, 02:27:57 PM »
Just dropped 100 Sharps PP bullets in 1:20 and the suckers were 571.5 to 572.8.  I was shocked for a 446 diameter bullet that is 1.5" and is supposed to be in the 550gr range.

Plan to reload these in a 45- 70 Sharps and Hi-Wall to shoot at Homer again, standing out there at 1000yds.  HOW MUCH POWDER to get the bullet out there?
Was planning on 72grs of Swiss 1.5 and Goex FFFg

How much compression do you plan to use? I have never had much luck with 3f pushing that much weight, but there are a bunch more experienced shooters around here than me.  Maybe the weight is off due to the mix of metals.  On one day, my lumps that should weigh 490 grs. come out from 489 to 490, then the next day they come out at 492 to 493.

CF, I decided to go with 73gr Swiss 1.5.  Here is the trajectory table to 1000 yds (which is the range I plan to shoot them at) ...
Range   Velocity   Impact   Drop   ToF   Energy   Drift
0     1180              -0.76   0   0   1769   0
100   1102   -5.98   13.68   0.27   1542   2.01
200   1042   -39.87   56.03   0.55   1379   6.44
300   994   -105.7   130.32   0.84   1255   13.37
400   956   -206.46   239.54   1.15   1161   22.5
500   924   -344.82   386.36   1.47   1084   33.59
600   895   -523.25   573.26   1.8   1017   46.5
700   869   -744.15   802.62   2.14   959   61.15
800   845   -1009.81   1076.74   2.49   907   77.49
900   823   -1322.5   1397.89   2.85   860   95.46
1000   803   -1684.4   1768.25   3.22   819   115.01

At 1000 yds, the bullet should be 'sleeping' nicely doing 800 fps and with a 10 mph wind, the drift is only 115.  Anyway, 50 bullets have been loaded.  As for compress, didn't write it down

Best of luck with them.  Up here in the woods, we are lucky if we can find 500 yards without a tree in the way

CF ... fired 20 of these reloads today at 1000yds.  They were not accurate and I firmly believe the reason is I DID NOT USE A GREASE COOKIE - just lube on the paper.
They all made it to the 1000yd target in 25-30 mph gusting wind but the POI varied severely: 2' high and then the next round 5' low ... 1' left and the next round 3' right.
Am going to pull the bullets on the remaining rounds and try to salvage them by using a grease felt wad.

Next batch ... 1/8" GC!

JB;
My load for a 568 gr PP bullet in the .45-70 is 72 gr of 2F Goex EXP. that gives a vel of 1170 avg.
That load works good for me. At the last gong shoot it shot a very good 9 out of 10 at 1000 missed the first shot because there where no sighters allowed.
I don't think that the lack of the lube wad hurt the accuracy if you wiped  after every shot and kept the bore dry, or used a blow tube and kept the fouling under control.
I think that the lube on the patch hurt you more because of the chance the lube holding the patch on the bullet as it goes down range.
You don't want that patch to stay with the bullet any length of the way. I never got good consistent accuracy from a bullet with the patch lubed.
My load is.
72 gr of 2F exp
win case un sized
win standard rifle primer.
over the primer wad (Vellum paper)
Vellum wad over the compressed powder.
1/8" hard tallow wad.
1/16" fiber gasket wad under the bullet.
bullet friction fit with a light taper crimp. ( you can still pull it out of the case)
Dont go were the path leads,go were there is no path and leave a trail.
