Deer Lock Antlers
« on: November 24, 2007, 02:22:44 AM »
These two deer locked their antlers at a lake's edge. A fisherman found them and the DNR hulled them onto the shore. One was a 13 point and the other was a 8 point buck. Evidently they were doing what come natural at a lake's edge, got their antlers locked and during the struggle, they fell into the lake and drowned. The 8 point was about 175 field dressed and the 13 point was 225 pounds field dressed. They do get good sized around here.

That really is a shame!!!!!!! I for one don't think I would be eating any of that meat. How do they know for sure it was only a few hours they spent in the water. Dale

We have a lot of small lakes around here. This one is about straight West of me 15 miles or so.

I do not know for sure, but I would guess by the earth/shore freshness of the scraping. I do not think I would eat it either, unless I knew for sure how long they had been in the water.

I was watching a hunting show on TV the other day. The guys were hunting
pronghorn antelope and came across two male pronghorn who were battling
and their horns were locked. They weren't too far away from dieing from
exhaustion. The guy shot one of them so that they could get them separated
and at least one of them could go free. I guess it happens out there from
time to time.

They can accurately determine time of death by using an algorithm for core temp vs water temp. It's how we do it on people. It also sounds like rigor mortis hadn't set in yet, but that can be deceptive with rapid cooling.
http://www.springerlink.com/content/9kycrrgn7gpk3v78/. Inserting a liver probe is considered the most reliable method because it is encapsulated and can't be influenced by introduction of external elements as long as there is no penetrating trauma to the capsule. And before anyone else brings it up, yes potassium degradation in the vitreous humor can also be used, but it has a wider window of time it is only accurate to within about 8-10 hours. I know that's probably more than you guys wanted to know about determing time of death.
