Winter weather chases many of Ohio's songbirds south, but several species stick around during the cold months and they are joined by a variety of new feathered faces. The dark-eyed junco is one of these Ohio winter guests and a common visitor to backyard feeding stations. Juncos are recognized by the slate-gray in color on its head, breast, and back; a color that contrasts sharply with the white belly and outer tail feathers. Learn more about the dark-eyed junco.

Six Defiance County residents were charged with 52 wildlife violations in the Defiance Municipal Court following an investigation conducted by the Division of Wildlife. The suspects are accused of wildlife violations concerning white-tailed deer, fox, black bear, wild turkey, and Canada geese. Read more about this case.

The Division of Wildlife has launched a pilot grant program in the cities of Coshocton and Marietta in an effort to assist with the processing costs associated with donating venison to a food bank. The hope is to establish a dedicated fund to provide money to help donate venison to food banks throughout Ohio. Learn more about this effort.

Antlerless Deer Permit Reminder
The Division of Wildlife reminds hunters that the antlerless deer permit, new for the 2007-08 hunting season, is now valid only in urban hunting units or Division of Wildlife Controlled Hunts as they occur through February 3, 2008. Read more about the antlerless deer permit restrictions.

The regular deer-gun season may be over (see the results), but hunters still have plenty of hunting opportunities to look forward to with the extra gun hunting weekend December 15-16. There's even more opportunity when the statewide muzzleloader deer season opens one-half hour before sunrise December 27 and closes at sunset on December 30. This 4-day black-powder season is one of the best times to go hunting. The weather is cold and brisk, the fields and woods are relatively bare and silent, and only other avid hunters are out and about.

Ohio is one of the nation's leaders in raw furs. Fur trapping began with America's early settlers who made their living by harvesting furs and trading them for money. While fewer trappers today rely on furs as their sole source of income, the trapping tradition still remains strong. If you'd like to try trapping for the first time, you have the option of purchasing an apprentice hunting license and apprentice fur taker permit. Beaver and river otter trapping seasons open December 26. Check the 2007-2008 Hunting and Trapping Regulations for trapping zones and bag limits.

The nation's symbol continues to fly high above the Buckeye State and state wildlife biologists are asking Ohio residents to report bald eagle nesting activity they may observe in the wilds of Ohio. Each fall, eagle pairs perform routine repairs by adding sticks, twigs, and grasses to established nests. Some eagles may rebuild nests that were destroyed due to storms, while others may be reestablishing their nests at new locations. Landowners, hunters, birdwatchers and other outdoor enthusiasts can be a tremendous help by reporting anything that looks like a new nest, or any nest building activity.
