Has anybody ever...

Has anybody here ever filed/sanded a pallet wood stock at the pistol grip in order to get it to fit more closely, the rear of the action ?

If so, do you have any "tips" for doing the job..

    Any pics ?

Yes I have. There's plenty of wood there. I used a wood rasp to get the shape I wanted, then I used a finish remover to remove the rest of the finish. Remove the stock from the receiver and sand to the final shape. Check the stock and receiver fit often while sanding, you want the wood to be a little "proud" where it meets the receiver to prevent cracking or splitting. I've gotten good results with using an oil based stain and 5+ coats of tung oil. On the forend I just "rounded" the sharp edges and finished to match the stock.
It's really a pretty easy and fun project, I'd never done anything like that before, but was quite pleased with the results...
Just do it.

I've done one, this is really a wood stock painted with WalMart truck bed liner.  First with the stock mounted mark a line around the frame stock joint using a Sharpie or some other black marker, then remove the frame and sand until you still have a slight amount of the line left.  If you take off too much just add a little epoxy to build it up.  I also fitted a different butt plate to mine.  Larry

I like to use a fine tip marker and mark the edge of the wood where it needs to be sanded. It usually helps as a guide for how much needs to be removed....less work re-fitting the wood until it's perfect.

Remember to feather the edges to make the re-shaping less obvious. You'll need to re stain/seal the wood as well. ;)
