SERVER???
« on: November 26, 2007, 03:53:03 PM »
I'm on dialup, only 2 available here and this is the better of the 2. Getting online is rarely a problem, but after I get online sometimes, usually, it just sits there, going nowhere. Some days go well, most others don't. They worked on the lines a couple of weeks ago and my connect went up to 45, never been that high. It's usually 36-42. A friend in Indiana also has dialup, her connect is a constant 76. What gives??? I clean cookies regularly, and really believe it is something in their lines. One morning last week I connected 5X in 30 min but could not get any link to load, it would time out. Ideas???? I can't afford dsl. POWDERMAN.  ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Probably the phone lines. Tarnish under a screw, water in a cable, something like that. Figuring out what the problem is will take a while and some expensive equipment.

CHILACHUCK. Thanks, but it's their equipment. Everybody I've talked to around here says the connect and service has really gone downhill in the past 2 years. I wish they would upgrade. I'd like to hear about connect speeds from others here to compare mt service to. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

Had the same problem with dial-up.  When i first when on line in 1996 it was working at about 8,000 bps.  It  kept getting slower and slower until it was down to about 3,000 bps with a speed booster.    Went to wireless last year:   What a difference.

You friend does Not connect at 76... 56K is the therotrtical Fastest speed the modem can operate at, and the FCC regulates it to a max speed of about 55.5 KBS

Powderman, that's the equipment I meant. There isn't all that much to mess up at your house, though I should have asked a couple of questions to make sure you were not the only one with problems.

What you described is the phone company messing up, and tracking that down will take special gear and training.
