45lc puma how hot?
« on: January 07, 2008, 01:24:27 PM »
How hot of load can I run in my Puma 45lc brass frame? Should I just stick with mild loads like cowboy loads or will it handle hot loads like for the T/C and Ruger blackhawks? For plincking I will just be shooting 200gr-250gr cast with a few grans of shotgun powder but for a hunting load I was thing 250-350gr cast or jacketed with some H110 under it.

Being a brass frame, I'm not sure.  To be safe, I'd contact Puma and ask if they "ok" their rifle with Buffalo Bore or equivalently loaded "+P" loads.  Wouldn't mention handloads to them though.

I called Legacy Sports and they said the don't recommend shooting +P loads in the gun, it was intended for cowboy loads. So I guess that answers my question.  I still think a 250gr or 300gr standard colt load out of that 24" barrel will bring down a deer out to 150yrds.

My son,dad and me were out shooting it yesterday evening, and we all were hitting a milk jug out at 100yrds holding off hand so I think its more then accurate to do the job. We were shooting Black Hills 250gr cowboy loads pushing 1000fps but I think I can load them a little faster then that and still be safe, this load is at the bottom of the colt standard load.

I think after I buy a 45LC in a pistol I'm going to find another one of these Puma's in 38/357 16" or 20" barrle for my oldest boy to shoot, the 24" barrle is a little heavy for him but he still shoots it good . He's in love with my 45LC Puma
