Making SKS fixed mag detachable
« on: November 30, 2007, 08:07:45 AM »
Several years ago I bought an SKS and was frustrated with the process of getting the fixed mag out. You know the drill, it's a hassle.
I thought since the large cap. mags are detachable, there must be a way to make the fixed mags detachable.
There is and it is real easy. A friend has several of these and uses nothing but the large mags. He is going to give me the old ones and I will have several to carry with me. I know they will be a little heavier than stripper clips, but I think they will be a little easier to use in a hurry.
Has anyone else done this and how did it work for you?

I cant help with the detachable mag issue; but I will ask WHY???  The SKS was designed as a real go to war rifle with the standard 10 shot mag loaded by stripper clips.  It was and is a perfectly good weapon, one that I would happily carry right now in combat.  The Chinese experimented with a detachable mag version to take AK mags as a transition then finally switched to the AK.

If you ask me the after-market detachable mags are a sad joke played on the American public to turn a decent war rifle into a "downtown tart", so the uninformed could play cowboy at the local range.  Ive carried a SKS in ugly places where people didnt like me, and it woks just fine as it was  intended.

Try this practice with the issued version and stripper clips versus the after-market mags, see who can keep their version running longer without fumbles and jams.  The strippers are cheap to buy but are built to last.  The after-market mags are usually expensive to buy and cheaply made.  If you really must have a "Hi-cap" look for the Chinese military 20 round replacement (but fixed) mag.

handi270:  I've played with a couple of those set-ups and they aren't fast to reload at all.  Neither is the AK for that matter.  The ARs are much faster on the reload than either the AK or a detachable mag SKS.  The SKS is pretty quick to reload using the designed stripper clips.  I have to go with Edelweiss on this one and ask why????  Mikey.
