243 vs 7mm-08 vs 30/30

Hello all,

I am about to buy my daughter her handi and I am still trying to figure out a big game round.  She will get a 223 or 204 for predators but my question is how does the recoil of the 243, 7mm-08 and 30/30 compare in the same weight of rifle (youth handi rifle) I am leaning towards the 30/30 which I reload and the 7mm-08 which I hear good things about.  but her comfort is the most important thing.  oh yeah she will start with blacktail deer then move on to black bear and elk.

I would go with the 30-30.

Of the 3 mentioned...and since you will be hand loading for it...go for the 7-08 ...get her outfitted with a sew on shoulder recoil pad...add a Limb Saver recoil pad & a soft cheek piece on the stock... and get her the best ear protection you can afford...then start her out on some mild hand loads...working up to the bear loads when she can handle it...In a short while...she will be doing fine with it...If she has never fired a rifle before...start her out on a 22 LR...teaching her the proper breathing control...and trigger control for the Handi...

30/30 a rimed case is always better in a break open single shot !
if 7 mm is your choice get a 7X30 bbl.

Carl,

This topic has been discussed many times before, here's one that's in the FAQs and Help sticky, topic is 243 vs 30-30, but the 7mm-08 is discussed too.

I would go with the 7mm-08 and as Mac said the recoil can be managed.

In your case, with reloading, you really can't go wrong with either the .30-30 or the 7mm-08.
I think from a performance standpoint, the 7mm bullet would  win out.

I went with the 7mm-08 for my daughter.  She's 12 now and this is her first year hunting.  She's killed a calf elk and a nice 4x4 mulie with it so far.  I started her on Hodgdon youth loads.  Look on their website for data.  60%-70% of max charges of H4895 for whatever bullet you're using.  ( If memory serves me correct)

She shot a lot of trap this summer and recoil doesn't bother her much.  For hunting she's shooting 140gr Partitions over 41.5gr of Varget.  I need to come up with a load for a 160gr Partition because she has an excellent chance of being issued a Montana bison tag in January.

I'm letting her skip school Thursday in hopes of finding her a second cow elk.  Montana extended the season two weeks and I got permission to hunt a ranch where she can get a second cow.

7mm-08 because I already load for it and I've killed elk with it.  LOTS of bullet choices!

I suggest the 30-30, you already reload for it, there are MANY available bullets weights and styles for it, you can load it to any level you need to suit her, as has been said it is a rimmed cartridge and it has a great track record, it don't get much better than that, and as has been said, you already reload for it....<><....:)
