Anyone used Barnes TSX's in the 30-06
« on: November 27, 2007, 01:36:45 PM »
Since this stupid state is going lead free next season, I'm having to redo my accurate loads to lead free bullets, ie. Barnes, since they're the only game in town.

I have a bolt in 30-06 but am going to dedicate it to heavier bullets and heavier game in other states, like maybe Utah-elk and AK-moose.  So am strongly considering getting a handi barrel in 308 or 30-06.  Seems like the sporter '06 barrels have been some of the most consistantly accurate for the 30 cals, so am wondering if any have used the Barnes offerings.  Looking at all from the 130gr to 165, with most consideration going to the 130-150gr.

I've shot the 168gr Match TSX in the .308 bull barrel, had some vertical stringing which I haven't worked on since, but accuracy was very good with max loads of Varget.

Thanks Tim.

BTW, I just updated my profile email address.  The offocial swichover date is 11/30 for the old one to shut off, but I will check both daily just in case.

My experience with solids has been bad.  I have never gotten any to shoot like a lead core bullet.  I can't tell you why, could be that 200 years of rifle development with lead bullets has tuned things to lead, it may take another 200 years to get copper to shoot as well.  Larry

The Barnes TSX needs to be pushed hard for best accuracy, Matt Parliament's 35 Whelen is a good example. ;) Max loads shoot the best in the 308 too, the group below is actually 2 groups of 3 shots, the lower 3 is the first group, the upper group .5gr more Varget, all fired in about 3 minutes, I wanted to see how the heat affected the bull barrel.
